Road trips dotted my college years, and it was during those years, my anxiety over flying grew worse, and my naiveté about climate change wained. The price of electric vehicles was unattainable, and the range? Blasphemously unimpressive. Fast forward to today and enter electric automaker, Lucid Motors, a company bent on shaving down drag and elongating mileage with the 2021 Lucid Air EV.

The 2021 Lucid Air EV is a purposefully sleek electric vehicle with 400+ miles of range and luxurious legroom.

lucid air

Lucid Air EV Power Systems

Lucid Motors relied on aerodynamics specialists to engineer the Lucid Air into the most aero-efficient electric vehicle on the market.

The Lucid Air EV uses a Dual ActiveCore motor with AWD miniaturized electric powertrain. The hardware is the LEAP or Lucid Electric Advanced Platform, which paves the way for the spacious interior. Max horsepower is a whopping 1080, and 0 to 60 only takes 2.5 seconds.

As for the EV’s range, the stock battery option commands a little more than 400 miles per charge. But, when hooked to an extended power pack, the Lucid Air can fetch up to 517 miles per charge.

Charging the Lucid Air’s battery is easy owing to its Combined Charging System (CCS). The onboard CCS is compatible with all Level 2 and 3 recharging stations and can achieve enough power for 300 miles in just 20 minutes.

Lucid Air EV Interior

The front row seats sport a darker tone for a pilot business aura. In front of the driver is a 34-inch curved 5K resolution glass display for frequently used information and an additional central display with supplemental information and controls that conceals a hidden compartment between the driver and passenger.

The Lucid Air app goes above and beyond standard connectivity. Your smartphone will sync not only with the EV’s two display screens but with more traditionally analog systems, too. Unlock the EV using proximity metrics. Once in the driver’s seat, utilize the integrated app’s facial recognition AI to prompt adjustments. Also on deck are route planning, Alexa voice control, and automatic software updates.

Lucid’s Space Concept takes advantage of the miniature powertrain and battery. The resultant space allows for dual, split-level storage compartments in the trunk and hood, along with the legroom for the tallest of your friends. For weekend warriors, the back seats lie down flat for ample extra storage or larger cargo.

Running the entire cabin’s length is a glass canopy for an undivided view of the surroundings, making the vehicle seem even bigger. The whole space feels like an SUV in a sedan-sized package.

A Sustainable Arrangement

The unique interior pulls focus from technology to luxury. Lucid Motors took cues from the airline industry, too: the Lucid Air interior resembles a high-end cockpit and spacious first-class seating. Californian landscapes inspire the interior color palette. Sustainably sourced and developed leather, wood, and fabrics adorn the cabin, carefully selected with Mother Nature in mind.

It comes as no surprise Lucid Motors is a product of the environmental poster child, California’s EV industry. Lucid is headquartered in Silicon Valley and has a Casa Grande, Arizona factory in the works. It’s a company bent on becoming the benchmark EV standard.

The Buy

For the 2021 Lucid Air EV, MSRP starts at $69,000, which competes directly with the Tesla Model Y Performance hybrid. It’s not exactly an average household price, but it’s the first step towards an affordable EV with an impressive intercity range.

Lunaz Range Rover: Classic. Electric. Expensive. https://improb.com/range-rover-classic/ Mon, 15 Feb 2021 14:00:29 +0000 https://improb.com/?p=44920 Classic, vintage, electric?

The post Lunaz Range Rover: Classic. Electric. Expensive. appeared first on Improb.

]]>

British-based automotive company Lunaz made a name for itself by re-engineering iconic classic cars into modern, sustainable, electric vehicles. The group’s work has focused on vintages models from three bellwether companies only: Bentley, Jaguar, and Rolls Royce. That is until recently, with the addition of the Range Rover Classic to the Lunaz line-up. But would you prefer a mint-condition Range Rover as is? Or the electric redux by Lunaz?

The Re-Built Lunaz Range Rover

With a starting price hovering around $450,000, Lunaz’s Range Rover Classic conversion won’t be attainable to the average driver. It’s drastically more expensive than other EVs on the market. Why?

Well, Lunaz isn’t just swapping out powertrains and engines; the automotive specialists strip each car down to the shell and completely rebuild it as a modern vehicle.

Lunaz uses traditional upholstery and restoration techniques; if you peeked inside one of its conversions — at first glance — it would appear original. Take up the driver’s throne, however, and you’ll notice that old gauges now display stats like battery life and torque. The group adds in all of the features of a modern car — Apple Play, leather side pockets cut for smartphones and devices — into a classic, giving each satisfied buyer a functional, vintage driver. It’s all history until you push play.

Because vintage cars aren’t often the subjects of auto conversions like those offered by Lunaz, the parts used in modern EVs don’t fit into these long-hooded hot rods.  The Lunaz-patented powertrain conversion meets power steering, updated brakes and suspension, air conditioning, and infotainment centers. The engineering team at Lunaz has taken care of it all — and hopes to add more modern features like cruise control in future rebuilds.

lunaz classic range rover

The Future of Classics

As a classic car owner, I first cringed at what Lunaz is doing. I’m not anti-electric; I’m just not a fan of butchering a classic.

I see both sides: with classics, it’s harder to find parts, the originals aren’t environmentally sound, but the aesthetic is a nod to the history. And I feel vintage car fanatics: horrified at the chop shop retooling, the tossing aside of an original. The lamenting mechanics and enthusiasts certainly could have gotten those bad boys up and running with original engines and a little TLC.

But battling with sustainability and the emergence of EV technology, Lunaz’s approach seems like a lifebuoy for older models. Lunaz recognizes the need for electric vehicles but doesn’t want to see these iconic cars left to rust as the industry moves on. These cars see a second life as daily drivers — not just as showcase specimens or lost relics.

Stripping Down To Swap

There’s not much information on the Lunaz Range Rover models yet, but the company focuses on quiet, reliable conversions. One of its first updates, the Jaguar XK120, is powered by a 120-kWh battery for a long range of 300 miles, comparable to current market EVs.

Of course, personally, my concern goes back to that mint-condition car. Yeah, parts for a 1950s Rolls-Royce may be difficult to come by. But there are scores of Range Rovers begging for restoration. I wonder, is Lunaz fishing for models too close to the present?

lunaz classic range rover

The Most Expensive Classic You’ll Find

Lunaz is undoubtedly forward-thinking. Founder, David Lorenz, felt indebted to his daughter and pursued the concept as a way to give her generation a chance to drive vintages like the Range Rover Classic.

Of course, the price point limits Lunaz Range Rovers to a very niche market. Lorenz’s daughter is probably one of a handful that will get the chance to drive one of these electric classics.

“There are enough car companies. We’re an energy company that’s building this car to tell a story.” Those are the words of Hyperion CEO Angelo Kafantaris in his recent interview with Car and Driver.1

On August 12, 2020, Hyperion released their XP-1 prototype to the public. It’s daring. It’s sexy. It’s powerful. It’s ambitious. And, although pricing remains veiled, we’re told that this AWD two-seater will demand seven figures.2

Form and Function

First things first – let’s talk power.  Leave those dream car pinup posters where they belong – in the past with your Hot Wheels collection and Teen Spirit. The XP-1’s big-kid performance enhancements leave little to the imagination:

  • 1,000 horsepower
  • 0 to 60 miles per hour (0.96 km/h) in 2.2 seconds
  • Top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour (322 km/h)
  • 4-motor AWD (that’s one motor per wheel)
  • 3-speed transmission
  • Vortex cold air intake
  • Double-barrel exhaust stacks
  • 1,016-mile range (1,635 km)
  • 3 to 5-minute refuel time

hyperion xp-1

All of this oomph would be for naught without an ultralight, titanium-reinforced carbon fiber architecture:

  • 2,275-pound (1,032 kg) ultralight body
  • Carbon titanium monocoque (unified body/chassis)
  • Aluminum alloy double-wishbone suspension

But what of the XP-1’s curb appeal?  Supercar admirers take note – there’s a lot here to write home about, including a to-die-for body and interior. Think McLaren meets modernized DeLorean:

  • V-wing doors
  • Aerodynamic solar-panel buttresses
  • Pirelli P Zero tires
  • 20-inch front wheels; 21-inch rear
  • Hydraulic ride height system
  • 42-inch height; 83-inch length
  • 98-inch curved-screen dash with gesture-control technology
  • 134-inch wraparound glass canopy with tint control
  • Hand-stitched leather seats

hyperion xp-1

H2 Hype

Hyperion Motors is but one of three Hyperion divisions, the other two being Hyperion Aerospace and Hyperion Energy. The Aerospace division has ties to NASA, an organization deeply involved in developing and utilizing hydrogen fuel cells in spacecraft. In their collaboration with NASA, Hyperion Aerospace has obtained research capabilities and licensure, increasing the hydrogen fuel tech available to Hyperion Energy and Motors.

For you nerds out there, here’s a bit about the XP-1’s hydrogen (H2) fuel cell technology: a proton exchange membrane (PEM) cell takes in atmospheric oxygen (O2, obviously) and H2 that’s been sequestered in the eco-hypercar’s two titanium-reinforced carbon-fiber tanks. Through a silly-complex catalyzation process, the O2 and H2 mingle. The result? Electricity and deionized water vapor. That electricity is then siphoned through the carbon fiber system into ultracapacitor storage and then disseminated to all four high-efficiency magnet electric motors – that’s one motor per wheel. The water vapor exits through the XP-1’s showy double-barrel exhaust stacks.

The carbon fiber storage system, courtesy of NASA engineering, means that batteries – a significant drawback of electric vehicles – need not apply. Lack of battery is one secret behind the car’s ultralight, 1,000-mile per charge drive range. And apart from saving weight, hydrogen systems are far less toxic to produce/recycle and far more temperature tolerant than EV batteries.hyperion xp-1

A New Titan of Industry

Kafantaris has stated that the oversexed, superpowerful XP-1 isn’t so much a flagship vehicle; it’s an educational testament to hydrogen power. The Hyperion trifecta’s mission is to bring high-quality, affordable hydrogen energy to the American public. What better way to get our attention than with a vehicle that screams sex, power, and eco-friendliness? And what better excuse to build hydrogen fuel stations across the US? Clever.

Hyperion’s XP-1 hits the pavement in early 2022, with a limited release of just 300 models. In the meantime, keep your ear to the ground for Hyperion Energy – our ostensible beacon to a hydrogen-powered future.

Speed racers: sit up, and strap in as BMW M Gmbh crosses the finish line once again. In August, the BMW M gave us a peep show of their new BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 GT3 duo with a prototype reveal during the BMW M Grand Prix of Styria. Camouflage distorted each body’s curves, careful not to show too much skin. You could tell significant differences between the road-style coupe’s and motorsport GT’s bodies even through the facade. Needless to say, it left us wanting more.

The two share the same heart, born and bred side by side: a new straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo with a high revving concept powers these two racehorses. The transfer of technology from a motorsport vehicle to a road-ready series shows the worth of the BMW M GmbH motor group.bmw m duo

BMW M4 GT3

Austrian Phillip Eng, professional racer and BMW works driver, made the prototype victory lap in the M4 GT3, expressing he’s anxious to establish the M4 GT3 has what it takes to keep the BMW M momentum alive. The BMW M4 GT3 will replace its predecessor, the M6 GT3, as BMWs best foot forward on the track. And that is saying something — the M6 GT3 has a handful of victories under its hood; we’re excited to watch the M4 GT3 make its debut in 2021 and race full force in 2022.

Technical data is not yet released, but aesthetically, you can see differences from the M6 GT3. The M4 sports dual exhaust tips beneath the taillights, hooded and elongated headlights, plus a frameless grill to match its M4 Coupe twin.bmw m duo

BMW M4 Coupe

The M4 Coupe made its world premiere in September, and the modern muscle car did not disappoint. The beauty has the potential to the fastest street car to date with 503 max horsepower and a max 479 pound per foot of torque, galloping from zero to sixty in 3.8 seconds.

A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, but the M4 Coupe is available with an automatic 8-speed M Steptronic transmission for the need-for-speed individuals. Control yourself in the driver’s seat with the Adaptive M Suspension and M Sport Differential, handling weaving traffic with ease.bmw m duo

Powerful Innovation and Creativity

The M4 Coupe and M4 GT3 represent the soul of BMW M; their fleet continues to grow and surpass the expectation set by previous generations of BMW M-series models. Bridging the gap between streets and racetrack, most wouldn’t believe that the sexy M4 Coupe harness the same power as the M4 GT3 waiting at the traffic light next to them. The M4, slated for a March 2021 release, beckons a respectable $72,795 price tag.

As for the currently unpriced M4 GT3, like us, you’ll be anxiously waiting for it to cross the starting grid in 2022.

Unlike in the past, when a car was thought to be a luxury,  owning a car is now regarded as a necessity. But that doesn’t meant that you can’t ride in style, and a car that looks stunning today could very well become a classic in the next 10 years. Part of what will make what you own today a classic is availability, so hold on to and take care of those models that you think might appeal to a collector.

Here is a list of 12 cars that we think will become classics in the near future.

Pontiac Solstice CoupePontiac Solstice Coupe

The Pontiac Solstice Coupe has a relatively small cabin that’s designed to only accommodate the driver and one passenger. Besides that, the car has limited storage space. However, the manufacturer compensated for these shortcomings by including a removable roof. The roof allows the driver and the passenger to enjoy a cool breeze or sunlight while cruising on the road.

Since the car only measures 5.6 cubic feet, it can literally fit into any parking space. Since the car comes with a single rear drive train, you can readily tell that it’s not to be used when visiting the countryside. The car features a 2.4-liter engine that’s capable of generating 174 horsepower. It actually takes just 6 seconds for the car to reach 60mph.

Pontiac gives you the option of choosing between 5-speed automatic transmission and 5 gear manual transmission. The car features an internal AC system that lets you tame high temperatures in the cabin. On top of that, you can raise and lower the windows regardless of whether the engine is turned on or off. This is because the windows are operated manually.

For more cool cars like this, be sure to browse our list of the best Grand Touring cars you can buy.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is a great soon-to-be-classic car that comes with two doors and is designed to be an entertaining ride. The car features spoked rims that make it stand out from a distance. Besides that, the car only offers 6 gear manual transmission. Otherwise, the car is very fast because it’s equipped with an 8-plug, 5.2-liter engine that delivers 526 horsepower. The model comes with a magnetic car control feature that helps in avoiding colliding with other motorists. The downside is that the car doesn’t space for baggage at the back. Besides that, the roof is not designed to be convertible. You will also have to bear with high temperatures because the car doesn’t feature an AC.

Mazda RX-8Mazda RX-8

The first model of the Mazda RX-8 was made in 2003 while the last was released into the market in 2012. The car runs on a Wankel rotary engine, which is a replacement for the piston engine. The car is highly recommended for families because it has the capacity of carrying four people, including the driver.

Although the car has a permanent roof, there are four doors that compensate for the unconvertible roof. You can, therefore, enjoy a cool breeze by lowering any of the four windows. The car comes with a 1.3-liter engine that produces 232 horsepower. If you are a hands-on driver, you can go for the 6-gear manual transmission. Those who prefer to drive hands free can pick the 6-speed automatic transmission.

The car runs on 19-inch alloy rims that are built to withstand rusting. Your comfort has been addressed by installing shock absorbers to guarantee a smooth ride. The seats are also cushioned with leather covers to make them gentle on your back. The car comes with front and side airbags for protecting the driver and passengers against impacts caused by accidents. There is also a tire pressure monitoring system that helps you know when the tires need to be refilled or replaced.

You may also be interested in some of the top street legal cars that do go over 200 MPH. Don’t miss them.

Dodge SRT ViperDodge SRT Viper

The Dodge SRT Viper uses a rear drivetrain to accelerate itself forward and backward. The car is, therefore, best suited for tarmacked roads. The vehicle is designed to carry two people only, and that’s why it has two doors. You can bask in the sun or enjoy a cool breeze while in the car by simply folding the roof down. Since the car is convertible, you can open and close the roof effortlessly. The vehicle is equipped with a 10 cylinder, 8-liter engine that generates 450 horsepower when you step on the gas. On top of that, the engine is operated using an electrically controlled 6-gear manual transmission.

Saab 9-5Saab 9-5

The Saab 9-5 is arguably the best alternative to German machines. In fact, that 9-5 has already entered into the league of the classics because the last car was sold back in 2005. With a sitting capacity of four people, you can use the car for any occasion. The car also comes with a spacious trunk that provides ample storage for keeping your valuables while traveling.

This model features chrome finish rims and headlights that are much smaller than those of the previous model. The seats are heavily padded for maximum comfort, and the four windows are designed to raised and lowered at the touch of a button.

The car comes with a 4 cylinder, 2.3-liter engine that produces 150 horsepower. The engine is also equipped with a 16-volt turbocharger that boosts its power to 260 BPH.

The car comes with child safety locks to prevent kids from opening the doors while it’s on the move. You also don’t need to worry about forgetting your turn signal when you want to make a turn because the side mirrors are fitted with indicator lights. Other safety features include an emergency trunk release, an automatic braking system, and front, side, and rear airbags.

We have prepared the list of the fastest cars in the world. Don’t forget to check them out.

The Porsche Cayman Boxster Spyder is a car that’s designed for racing. There are just two seats that are reserved for the driver and the co-driver. The wing that’s installed on the rear is just another accessory that enhances the beauty of the car.

The seats are deliberately not padded so that they can be much lighter. And, in fact, this is not the only thing that Porsche has done to minimize the weight of the car. They have also skipped the radio and air conditioner. The doors are also constructed from aluminum because it’s lighter than other metals.

The car features a 24-valve flat-6 aluminum block and heads, with direct fuel injection. Transmissions of the engine are made via 7-speed dual-clutch automatic or 6-speed manual.

Honda S2000Honda S2000

It’s amazing how a small car can carry a 2,000cc engine. The car runs on a 4 cylinder, 2.0-liter engine that guarantees 240 horsepower for unrivaled performance. Although the Honda S2000 comes with a 6-speed transmission system, you won’t need to worry about changing the gears because it moves automatically.

The car features a 2.0-liter VTEC engine that’s tailored for vigorous performance. The roof of the car is designed to open and close so that the occupants can bask in the sun or enjoy the breeze. The electric steering that makes it easy to make turns without the risk of veering off the road.

The downside is that the car can’t carry more than two people. The other shortcoming is that there is no space for keeping luggage.

The term GT comes from the Italian Gran Turismo, which basically describes any car that is designed for both high speeds and long distances. It came to be in the 1950s but really only enjoyed the popularity it was due when major manufacturers like Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler started using the initials to push their high-performance machines.

We have since changed the term to grand touring, and in some cases added other letters to it to define different makes and models of performance vehicles. But what defines the GT, what separates it from other categories of automobiles that are flooding the markets of the world? And what should you be considering if you are looking at taking the plunge into the wonderful world of the GT?

We have put together a list of the Best Grand Touring style cars that are available for the car-buyer in today’s diverse automotive industry. Have a look, read the comparisons, then make a decision on which of these must-have toys is the one just-for-you.

Rolls-Royce WraithRolls-Royce Wraith

If we are going to talk about grand touring cars, why not start with the grandest of all, the Rolls Royce Wraith? Let’s face it; when it comes to all things luxury, it’s hard to forget a Rolls-Royce, and the Wraith is certainly a car that fits all of the stereotypes of this exclusive brand. Based on the chassis of the classic Ghost, its two-door pillar-less design sets it apart from the Rolls-Royce’s that most of us have come accustomed to. The manufactures relied heavily on influences from classic 50s-style American cars. In what seems to be a contradiction, the windows retract fully like a convertible, but the roof remains solid like a classic hardtop.

Technically, the Wraith is considered a two-door hardtop coupe, but one of the things I love about this car is the drive-train that will push this beast to very comfortable highway speeds. Under the hood is the highly engineered BMW N74 twin turbo V12. This little gem will produce an awe-inspiring 623 horsepower, enough to get you down any piece of pavement, let alone the highways of the U.S. The price tag may scare you off a little, but what the hell, if you’ve got, flaunt it.

Lexus LFALexus LFA

The Toyota Companies luxury division, Lexus, gave us this remarkable car for too short a time. Manufactured between 2011 and 2012, only 500 of the featured model were produced. Even though this car has been described as a two-door sports car, it fits right in with the grand touring category. The first versions of this car were unveiled in 2005 and went on to become what is essentially one of Japan’s most expensive road cars to ever be built. The version that you see here is priced at around $375,000; that, is of course, if you can find one that is for sale.

This Formula-One inspired car is powered by a 553 horsepower 4.8-liter V10 engine that was developed in conjunction with Yamaha and will get you from 0-60 mph in just under 4 seconds. Once you hit the highway in one of these beauties, you are sure to turn the heads of any motoring enthusiast. One well-known car magazine described the LFA as “expensive, over-specified and looks like an evil transformer, the greatest Japanese car? Maybe”.

Ford Mustang GTFord Mustang GT

Let’s look at some home-grown muscle that well and truly characterizes the true meaning of the term GT. This is the 6th generation of the extremely popular pony car and is, without doubt, the best yet. Probably the most notable change on the newest Mustang is the widened body. An extra 1.5 inches has been added to the width of the car, while 1.4 inches has been eliminated from the body height. Ford has improved many other aspects of the classic car as well. They increased the passenger space while managing to keep the same wheelbase length. Combine this with a brand new independent suspension system designed specifically for this car, and you have a pretty nice grand tourer.

Now for the biggest surprise. Ford has given you three engine options to think about. First, the V8. Let’s face it; if you are going to have a Mustang, you might as well go for the muscle as well. But for the economy-minded motorist who still wants to own a classic, there is the 3.7-liter V6 model capable of 300 horsepower or the brand new development of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder power plant that will give you a respectable 310 horsepower. Whatever your needs, the Ford Mustang GT will deliver.

Chevrolet CorvetteChevrolet Corvette

Okay, so I gave you the rundown on the Ford Mustang first, but not to upset the Chevy fans out there; it’s now your turn. I guess nothing says grand tourer more than the word Corvette. Since 1963, General Motors has been exciting us with generation after generation of these beautiful cars. Like the Mustang, this U.S.-made classic will always be a favorite for the Stateside car enthusiast. This car is the 7th generation offered by the General and is undoubtedly the best Vette yet. The motivation for your pavement outings is supplied by a neatly packaged 5.5- liter, double overhead crankshaft, flat-crank V8 that will provide 500 highway horsepower resting under your right foot.

Whether you are a highway tourer or an inner-city street cruiser, the Chevrolet Corvette is a car well worth considering as your next toy. Not only will it turn heads regardless of the type of pavement you are on, but it is going to be an inspirational and exciting car to drive. It’s an American classic that will go down in the annals of automotive history as one of the biggest trend-setting vehicles of any generation.

BMW 8 SeriesBMW 8 Series

The Bavarian Motor Works Company has always produced stylish and extremely well-engineered motor vehicles, and the 8 Series grand tourer is no exception. The 8 series of cars was first introduced to the world markets way back in 1990 and has gone on to bigger and better things since. Originally only available as a two-door coupe, the latest variants also include a soon-to-be-released convertible. The two options that you also have are the front engine rear-wheel drive format or the road-hugging all-wheel-drive configuration that will keep you stuck to any highway you choose to venture on.

The interior of this very pretty automobile is as you would expect from BMW, luxurious and practical. The German car manufacturer is now offering the choice of the highly regarded in-line-six diesel engine, an unusual fit for a grand tourer, or the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. The Series 8 BMW is unashamedly aimed at the driver who is looking for not only performance but a little prestige as well. There are not too many manufacturers out there that have so much faith in one model, but 20 years into production, it’s still a best seller.

Aston Martin DB9Aston Martin DB9

If there was ever the ultimate classic GT car, then the Aston Martin is definitely the one. When writing about such an iconic manufacturer, words like legendary, luxurious, and stylish come to mind, but as I am a fan, all I need to write is “James Bond.” Okay, let’s get all that silliness out of the way. The Aston Martin DB9 is one very serious motor vehicle. Not only does it come from a lineage of incredibly successful and classic cars, but it’s not scared to give you the performance that you would expect from this British masterpiece.

Sadly, for those of us who regard this car as an all-time classic, Aston Martin decided to call it a day for the DB9 after 12 very successful years. If you can manage to lay your hands on one of these cars, you will be able to harness the power of the “Vanquish” designed 5.9-liter V12 engine that will make your ride a 510 horsepower journey. It doesn’t matter where you are on this wonderful planet of ours, if there is a highway to be conquered, then the Aston Martin DB9 is the car to do it in.

Porsche 911Porsche 911

When it comes to grand touring cars, no list could ever be complete without a Porsche somewhere in it. Even though the majority of us won’t think about this, the 911 is one of the most versatile sports cars on the market today. You will find these legendary rear-engine steeds on every possible surface you can imagine. From the racetracks of the world to rally championships and even the occasional sojourn into drag racing, these all-around workhorses are comfortable in any given circumstance.

When it comes to pure driving pleasure, there are not many cars that come close to the experience one has when behind the wheel of a Porsche. We tend to forget that unlike some other cars on this list, Porsche has been around since 1933, so therefore has a wealth of knowledge and experience to fall upon when it comes to designing cars with not only performance in mind but driving gratification as well. Take on any highway with confidence, because you can rest assured, the Porsche 911 will take it all in its stride without working up a sweat.

Maserati Gran TurismoMaserati Gran Turismo

The name itself embodies everything that GT stands for. Since 2007, the Gran Turismo has graced the roads and highways of the world with the lucky few that own one, enjoying every mile passed. Now, for those of you who are Maserati fans, the Gran Turismo was based on the Quattroprts V platform, which utilizes the double-wishbone front and rear suspension and has a drag co-efficiency of .33. Designed primarily as the ideal driver’s car, Maserati has spared no expense in giving you the ultimate ride.

Even though the power source is a relatively small 4.2 liters, this V8 will still throw out an impressive 399 horsepower, nothing to be sneezed at, and is coupled to their ZF 6-speed automatic and semi-automatic transmissions. The interesting thing about the engine in this car is that Maserati developed it with rival manufacturer Ferrari; the Maserati trident and the prancing stallion, certainly a formidable combination, and a potential conqueror of any of the world’s highways.

Mercedes-AMG S63 CoupeMercedes-AMG S63 Coupe

AMG, the performance off-shoot of Mercedes, is no slouch when it comes to turning a luxury sedan into something that is in a class all of its own. The S63 Coupe is a prime example of their treatment. What literally started out as an S-class platform vehicle, the end results that AMG achieved are absolutely amazing. AMG utilizes all of the next generation technologies available to them, things such as ultra-modern interior designs and features, a sound system that is next to none, and a suspension update that will make your ride as smooth as silk. This, combined with their use of an engine construction that is not only efficient but oriented toward the performance end of the spectrum.

The use of a 5.5-liter direct fuel injected twin-turbocharged engine hooked up to Mercedes’s 7 speed MCT transmission ensures not only a comfortable ride but, if need be, an exhilarating one. The M157 engine also has 25% better fuel economy than its predecessor, the M156, meaning your highway tours will cost you less in gas, and U.S. tax. It also features what is becomes extremely popular among the name brands, the stop-start mode, and has been lightened to weigh in at only 204 kilograms. If it’s a classy cruise you want, you will be hard pressed to bypass the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe.

Bentley Continental GTBentley Continental GT

It’s funny; I’ve written quite a lot of articles revolving around the automotive industry, but I am sure I have never used the words Bentley and grand tourer in the same sentence before. Not that I am saying that this combination is a bad thing; I think that this is probably one of the best GT cars on the road today. As I researched more on the Bentley name, I realized that they have been manufacturing GT-style cars for quite some time. The Continental GT has been around since its inception in 2003 and was the first Bentley to be released by the new ownership of Volkswagen AG.

Bentley is renowned for its trademark luxury appointments, which go hand-in-hand with its prestigious reputation, so why not enter the field of the grand tourer? The Continental has also seen the introduction of mass-production, a first for Bentley in its history. The powerful W12, 6-liter engine will provide you with around 550 horsepower, enough for any respectable chauffeur to get you to the next meeting in style and opulence. Grand touring has never been held in such high esteem.

Ferrari GTC4 Lusso TFerrari GTC4 Lusso T

The Italians certainly know how to make a vehicle that is not only stylishly beautiful but a performance oriented car as well. The GTC4 Lusso T is a prime example of this combination and is remarkably well-designed. Based on the shooting-brake body design, this machine is a three-door, all-wheel drive dream. Its four seats will provide the driver and his special friends a comfortable and exhilarating cruise down any super-highway in the world. First seen at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016, this car replaced the Ferrari FF, which ceased production the same year.

The thrust is provided by Ferrari’s F140 65 degree V12 engine that produces a well-respected 682 horsepower at a very comfortable 5,750 rpm. Ferrari has claimed that this engine will motivate the GTC4 to a top speed of 208 mph and will accelerate you from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Not only does this car have all-wheel drive, but it also has an improved version of their four-wheel-steering system, making this stallion a very sticky thoroughbred indeed.

Ferrari 812 SuperfastFerrari 812 Superfast

The Italian auto manufacturing giant has also given us the Ferrari 812 Superfast model. This two-door two-seater Berlinetta-styled GT will present you with a very respectable 789 horsepower, generated from the F140 GA 6.5-liter V12 engine. What makes this combination of car and drive chain unique is the intentional disregard of technology, relying solely on natural aspiration instead of a force-fed system. These two versions of the GT class of car from Ferrari offers the enthusiast a difference of configurations that will suit most.

Cadillac ELRCadillac ELR

Even though the ELR is not really classed as a GT, it is well worth looking at. It is a four-passenger compact coupe but with one interesting difference from the rest of the cars that we have looked at so far. The Cadillac ELR is a hybrid, based on the same power-chain as the Chevrolet Volt. The Voltec EREV drive-chain is coupled with the ELR’s lithium-ion battery pack, giving the vehicle a 106 mph top speed.

Even though it is relatively slow compared to some of the other cars we have looked at, it is extremely well-appointed with all of the luxuries you would come to expect from Cadillac. Unfortunately, production of the ELR ceased in February of 2016, leaving total unit sale figures of just short of 3,000. If you can find one of the rare gems, buy it, because I am sure that the value will only increase as the years go by.

GT Honorable Mentions

There are plenty of other cars that come under the guise of the GT, and here are a few that are worth mentioning. BMW has the M6, the two-door version of the M5 that features the same mechanics and driver comfort. The V10 version was probably the most sought after and is still a great tourer.

Who could forget the remarkable cars that the Jaguar Company gave us throughout the years? The classic XJS and E-Type, two of the finest GT class cars that the English manufacturer offered the world. The first of the V12 engines to be mass-produced in a street legal car. And the classic body design of the E-Type that is still admired and sought after by collectors everywhere. And who can forget the decades that Mercedes gave us the SL series? This two-seater GT was popular for many years, long before AMG came onto the scene.

There is also a myriad of other manufacturers that offer GT-style cars to the marketplace. Cars like the Volkswagen EOS 3.6 V6, or the Volvo C30 and C70. The Audi A5 and Infinity G37, the Dodge Challenger R/T and the Cadillac CTS Coupe. The list goes on and on, so never fear; there IS a GT-style car out there that will be exactly what you are looking for.

The post The 16 Best Street Legal Cars that Can Do Over 200 MPH appeared first on Improb.

]]>

Hands up for any petrol-head out there that hasn’t dreamt of joining the 200 mph club. I know I have, but, unfortunately, I have never had the budget to be able to afford the vehicle that would propel me to that magical number. When I started to research this list, I expected to come across names like Ferrari. Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Porsche, but what I found quite surprised me.

First, there a quite a few state-side produced vehicles that are quite capable of reaching that mystical number, and they are quite reasonably priced, making 200 mph not that far off a rev-head’s pipe-dream. Cars like the Dodge Challenger and the Cadillac CTS-V. Then, there is Hennessey, a U.S. automotive manufacturer that most have never heard of, yet they produce a world-class hypercar.

A little further investigation found me eye-balling one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen. The Swedish designed and made Koenigsegg Jesko will leave you breathless when you realize just what technology has gone into the research and development of this amazing vehicle. I did not realize when I first started this that there were so many cars available to the public that are not only street legal, but capable of reaching the “200 mph” mark.

Read on, and like me, be amazed at the range of cars out there that make this ultimate speed list. Oh, and the list ends with a little electrifying surprise for you all.

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat RedeyeDodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye

What a better way to begin talking about those vehicles capable of 200mph+ than to start with some home-grown muscle. Let’s just say one word, HEMI! This legendary engine design is still pushing all sorts of vehicles to the edge of some incredible speeds. Just look at the Top Fuel category in drag racing, cars that are capable of well over 300mph over 1,000 yards. The Dodge Challenger certainly won’t reach those sorts of speed, but as a fully street legal car, it is amongst some of the fastest in the world. Like its sibling, the Dodge Charger SRT, the Hellcat is motivated by an enormous 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8 that will produce up to 797 horsepower. The power chain includes the all-new reinforced ZF 8 speed transmission, and the track-tuned suspension keeps it all on the pavement.

Unlike its 200 mph predecessor, the Dodge Viper, which relied on a massive 8.3 liter V10 power plant, the engineers at Chrysler have perfected the 383-cubic-inch V8 to current engine standards. What this all means is that this beast is capable of 203 mph and is definitely one of the best in the current line of muscle cars on the U.S. market today.  Even though you probably won’t get much change out of $70,000 for one of these steeds, it is certainly better than paying hundreds of thousands for a vehicle that can deliver the same speed as this beauty.

Cadillac CTS-VCadillac CTS-V

I was going to start the list with this car, but I thought by doing so, I would be showing my bias. Ever since I was a young lad and saw my first 1965 Cadillac Eldorado, I fell in love with all things Cadillac. Today, all these years later, I still have an extreme soft spot for the Caddie. This particular stallion from the General Motors stable is one hell of a sleeper. Cadillacs have always been known for their luxury. However, this monster is not only luxurious but ferocious to-boot. Underneath that beautifully styled hood, lies a purring tiger that once unleashed is extremely hard to tame. I am referring to the 6.2-liter overhead valve, pushrod pumping supercharged V8. This impressive piece of engineering is quite often compared to its European competitors, and in most cases, it comes out on top for performance, but especially in value-for-money.

Technically, this exceptionally designed vehicle uses the Corvette C6 ZR1 motivator coupled to an 8-speed 8L90 transmission. This combination produces a very comfortable 640 horsepower that will get you up to the 200 mph mark when the throttle is wide open. Sadly, 2019 sees the end of production for the CTS and CTS-V models, but don’t be too disappointed; the powers to be at GM have stated that a new CT5-V series will be the replacement. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see the next generation of the high-performance Cadillac.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

The name Corvette is as synonymous with the United States as much as the 4th of July is, and rightly so. The very first Vette was introduced as a concept car in 1953 but eventually went into full production-mode a decade later. The name Corvette comes from the name of the small, extremely maneuverable warship and was suggested to the executives at GM by a very clever man in their public relations department named Myron Scott. The idea was accepted, and then, as they say in the classics, the rest is history.

This is the 7th generation Corvette and is the best yet. This beast is harboring the lovely little LT1 6.2-liter small block V8, which produces a neat 455 brake horsepower. Therefore, it’s not too shabby underfoot. Once you have decided to bite the bullet and buy one of these classic automobiles, you will have the option of fitting a performance exhaust and the choice of either a 7-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission.

This article is all about joining the 200 mph club, and what better way than to do it than in an American motoring classic? The Corvette ZR1 has a top speed of 212 mph and won’t break the budget getting you there. What does the future hold for the Corvette? Well, it is reported that the generation 8 Corvette will hit the pavements sometime in 2020. This new model will feature the whole new drive chain configuration, taking the 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged engine from the front and mid-mounting it, then transmitting all that power into an all-wheel-drive footprint. For nearly 6 decades, General Motors has been giving us the ultimate play-thing in the Corvette, and I am sure that the next Stingray will have plenty of surprises in its tail.

Jaguar F-Type SVRJaguar F-Type SVR

Let’s turn our attention to some classic British engineering in the Jaguar F-Type SVR. Jaguar has always had a reputation for combining luxury with style and performance, and this model certainly has all three factors combined into one very nicely presented package. First introduced at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2016, this stylish and well-developed vehicle became the first Jaguar since the XJ220 (discontinued in 1994) to be able to reach 200 mph. Powered by Jaguar’s 4th generation engine, the AJ-8 supercharged V8, which produces 567 horsepower, the SVR is able to utilize its all-wheel-drive system to push the car from 0-60 mph I just 3.5 seconds.

Now, not all of us are looking at just getting to 200 mph; some of us also want the luxury and style that Jaguar is renowned for. The SVR will not let you down. The interior is not suited for the family man, as it is a two-seater design, but who wants to take their kids on a 200 mph joy-ride anyway? The upholstery is, as always, leather, and the instrumentation control buttons, aluminum. It has a center consul touch-screen display and TFT display centered between the instrumentation gauges. It also features the new stop-start engine shutoff function, which they say increases the car’s fuel economy by 5%. The “Swallow Sidecar Company,” Jaguar’s original name, has certainly come a long way since 1922.

AUDI R8AUDI R8

The Germans have always been extremely clever engineers, and the Audi R8 is a prime example of their automotive mastery. This car has only been on the market since 2006, but it has certainly cemented a place in the mid-engine, sports car category. Developed and manufactured by Audi’s private subsidiary, Audi Sport GmbH, this classy little roadster is based on the Lamborghini Huracan platform. Implementing Audi’s world-renowned Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, this sleek package is not only quick but safe as well. The aluminum monocoque will keep the driver well protected as it is based on the Audi space frame design.

This car has been described as “minimalist” by some, but the fact that it can throw out a whopping 611 horsepower motivating it to 205 mph means that there is nothing minimalist about this surprising and exciting automobile. Not to rest on their laurels, the Audi management decided to cater for all sports car enthusiast and released a rear-wheel-drive model in 2017. The R8 RWS V10 Spyder is there for those thrill-seekers who like a little tailspin when playing with their toys. All in all, the Type 4S Audi R8 is an extremely capable aerodynamic package that will give you just a little bit change out of $170,000.

Porsche 911 Turbo SPorsche 911 Turbo S

Oh, those Germans; they’ve done it again. What can you write about the Porsche that hasn’t already been written? The ultimate “classic” sports car that the whole world has had a love affair with since James Dean’s tragic death at the wheel of his soon-to-be-classic 1955 550 Spyder convertible. It’s a true testament to a car that has seen many changes in the automotive world but has stuck to its guns and basic design. The Porsche 911 was first set upon an unsuspecting world in 1963 and probably raised the bar for all other sports car manufacturers to try to follow. Over the decades, the 911 has been race and road-proven many times, giving this car an exceptional pedigree.

The latest 911 is once again proving that Porsche is still one of the best sports car manufactures in the world. This is the “Sport Chorno” package that will give you 580 horsepower at the wheels and is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in a stimulating 2.8 seconds. This is all due to the extremely well-engineered twin turbocharged boxer 6-cylinder power plant that is capable of generating speeds of up to 205 mph. Ferdinand Porsche probably didn’t realize that his cars would become the all-time iconic sports car when he had an idea and founded the company way back in 1931.

Lamborghini Aventador SLamborghini Aventador S

Okay, just for a bit of fun, let’s see what $400,000+ can get you. How about an all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering 730 horsepower, V12 6.5-liter monster that looks absolutely beautiful. The Lamborghini Aventador S is one amazing automobile from a very impressive stable that has been producing top-end sports cars since 1963. Lamborghini is known around the world to be a fast car, a front runner in the sports car range, a market leader who other manufacturers follow, but did you know that the Aventador S is one of only a few Lamborghinis that is actually capable of reaching the 200 mph mark? The Lamborghini Company has a very interesting history since Ferruccio Lamborghini started the company over 5 decades ago. It has seen many owners over the years and even went into bankruptcy in 1978, but like all thoroughbreds, it found the strength to recover and is now owned by the Volkswagen group, under the Audi division.

The Aventador, which by the way is named after a fighting bull, sold an unexpected 12 cars after the initial unveiling in 2011, a figure that reached an unbelievable 5,000 units by mid-2016. The 2-door coupe and 2-door roadster are both built in Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’ Agata Bolognese in Italy and include the famous “scissor” doors that the brand is so well-known for. Another feature is the “Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Ativa” suspension control system which gives you 4 settings, including “Sport, Street, and Track, so when you reach the top speed of 217 mph, the car will stick to the pavement. There is also a setting that they call Ego, which unsurprisingly means that the individual can set the car up as desired. Like all of Lamborghini’s models, this amazing vehicle is a head-turner wherever it is seen.

Ford GTFord GT

You know a car is special when the manufacturer doesn’t bother giving it a model name. The people at Ford said to themselves, let’s just call the beast the GT. Like most super-cars, the Ford GT started life as a concept car but quickly turned into a full street-credible sports car that was made available to a waiting public. “poiler Alert: I’m going to drop a name here, so be prepared… The legendary Carroll Shelby was enlisted by Ford to help in the development of the GT. What more needs to be said? Unlike a lot of its counterparts in the 200 mph club, the GT relies on a surprisingly small engine. Underneath that sleek carbon fiber body sits a mid-mounted 3.6-liter V6 that will give you an incredible 647 horsepower to play with.

First put on the market in 2004, and only produced for 2 years, this flagship of the Ford Motor Company hit major success on the racetracks of the world. The original GT40 won 4 consecutive wins at the 24 hour Le Mans race from 1966-1969. The current version of the car was re-released onto an unsuspecting world in 2016 and is proving to be as popular as its predecessor. This car will push you to a top speed of 216 mph, but be warned: it is not cheap. Henry first gave us the assembly line, and now, he is giving us the ultimate in American sports car engineering.

McLaren SennaMcLaren Senna

Between 1988 and 1993, there was a relatively well-known formula one driver named Ayrton Senna who dominated the circuits of the world driving for team McLaren. This legend won 3 F1 championships and a world staggering 35 Grand Prix’s. Sadly, this icon of motor-sports died from injuries sustained in an accident in 1994, but the legend that he created lives on in the McLaren Senna, one of the world’s best-engineered automobiles. McLaren themselves describe this car as the “purest connection between car and driver,” and I guess only the privileged few will ever know. Totally inspired by McLarens sortie’ into the world of formula 1, this vehicle has managed to achieve an incredible power-to-weight ratio that will instantly inspire those with the ability to afford one of these machines to scoop it up at any cost.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged M840TR V8 motivator will put a formative 659 horsepower to the wheels under the superbly designed and incredibly aerodynamic carbon fiber skin. If you are technically minded, this vehicle will create a staggering 1764 pounds of down-force, making it stick to the road like you-know-what to a blanket. We all love to talk about the figures of propelling you to 60 mph hour from a standing start, but this animal, with a top speed of 211 mph, will get you from 0-180 mph in just 19.8 incredibly exhilarating seconds. If there is a car that is the best of the best, then the McLaren Senna may well just be the one. Oh, I almost forgot; this little gem will not leave you anything but small change from a million dollars.

Hennessey Venom F5Hennessey Venom F5

The next two cars that I am going to talk about are not only names that you may not have heard of before, but they are also extremely potent, being members of the 300 mph club. First, the Hennessey Venom F5 is somewhat appropriately named, as the pure toxin released by this car is absolutely scary. It’s not that often that you can combine the terms 1600 horsepower and street legal in the one sentence, but that’s exactly what the Hennessey Venom will deliver when it finally goes into a very limited production sometime in the not-too-distant future. The powers that be at Hennessey have made the decision that only 24 units will be produced, with the lucky owners being hand-picked instead of the usual first-in-first-served policy adopted by most other elite vehicle producers.

Before you get too excited and put in your order for this potential super-car, be warned: the price for one of these will probably be in excess of 1.6 million dollars. The ultra-light carbon fiber body hides a potentially potent 7.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that the manufacturers say is capable of pushing you to a very hair-raising 301 mph. Proclaimed as the “America’s Hypercar,” it will be put together in all its glory in the lone star state and will have the coolest of cowboys chomping at the bit to get their hands on one of these steeds.

Koenigsegg JeskoKoenigsegg Jesko

In 1994, a young man from Sweden named Christian von Koenigsegg decided to start his own company with the idea of producing a world-class sports car that would not only be street legal but would also set the motoring world on fire. Their first sojourn into the street-legal class was the CC8S, which was released in 2002. Koenigsegg set themselves apart from their competitors by developing and building the components for their vehicles in-house. They have recently designed the world’s first camless piston engine and continue to research and develop programs for electronic car systems and the next-generation of reciprocating engines.

The Jesko, their latest offering to the motoring fraternity is, without doubt, a state-of-the-art masterpiece of engineering excellence. Some have said that the introduction of the Koenigsegg Company was the reason that the term hypercar came into existence; the bar was set for those brave enough to follow. The Jesko, named after Christian’s father, is a beast that offers you an insane 1,600 horsepower, depending on the configuration, produced from the mid-located 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine coupled to their innovative LST (Light Speed Transmission) 9-speed tranny, giving it a top speed of 300 mph. This car will be put into production in 2020 and will sell for around 2.8 million dollars, but don’t get your hopes up too high; the restricted production number of only 125 units has already been sold.

Bugatti ChironBugatti Chiron

If you are like me, and you are a motoring enthusiast with a love for all-things-mechanical, you probably fall into the class of either a Bugatti lover or hater. The design of the car takes some getting used to if you are a hypercar fan. It is an engineering masterpiece, but that grill! I just can’t quite get used to it. That aside, this car is absolutely stunning in all departments. First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016, the Chiron utilized all of the engineering concepts form the Gran Turismo concept vehicle from 2015. Named after Louis Chiron, the iconic racecar driver from Monaco, this two-seater carbon fiber beast is going to get you from 0-60 mph in a whiplashing 2.4 seconds.

The impetus behind that incredible acceleration is the 8.0-liter Quad turbocharged (yes QUAD) W16 engine that, once revved up to 6,700 rpm, will put a gentle 1,500 horsepower under your right foot. The people at Bugatti have been responsible enough to electronically limit how quick the Chiron is, but it is still rated to have a top speed of 261 mph. Incredibly, the first 200 cars were sold before manufacturing even started, a true testament to this supercar, regardless of whether you are a fan or not.

Aston Martin ValkyrieAston Martin Valkyrie

If you are in the market for one of these cars, you are going to be in for some unusual service. First, your whole body will be scanned by a 3-dimensional scanner to make sure that the driver’s seat molds perfectly to your body. A collaboration between Aston Martin, Red Bull Racing, and an assortment of other manufacturers, the makers claim that the Valkyrie is the fastest street-legal car in the world, a claim that is probably difficult to back up.

One of the design features that set the Valkyrie apart from its rivals is the open underfloor design that effectively works on the same principle as a venturi, creating a vacuum as air passes over it. This produces incredible down forces that keep the car stuck to the road when driven at speed.

One name that we are all familiar with is “Cosworth,” and that is exactly what Aston Martin choose to power their flagship vehicle. A neat little package of a 6.5 liter V12 linked to a Ricardo dual-clutch 7-speed transmission allows the Valkyrie to reach a top speed of 250 mph – all this from an impressive 1,160 horsepower.

Apart from its performance, the Valkyrie’s interior is straight from the stuff of movies. Rather than the traditional instrument cluster, it features several screens that relate all information relevant to the driver. Even the side mirrors utilize cameras. It is obvious why this car has always been a preferred form of transport for everyone favorite spy.

Bentley Flying SpurBentley Flying Spur

To most, the name Bentley conjures up exclusivity and luxury, the world of executives and chauffeurs, politicians and millionaires, movie stars and rock musicians, certainly not the 200 mph club. The Flying Spur is classed as a full-sized luxury car, but it has to be on this list because it will have you getting between appointments at a relatively quick 207 mph. Now, apart from all of the interior features that you would expect from one of the world’s leading luxury vehicles, what lies under the hood of this lavish vehicle will leave you breathless, and somewhat surprised.

The heart of the Flying Spur is the 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged Volkswagen W12 engine (yes, I said Volkswagen). This proven powerplant will give you a comfortable 552 horsepower at 6,100 rpm linked to a 6-speed auto that drives the four-wheel-drive system that delivers the power to the road, supported by their “Adaptive Air Suspension” system. Unless you are actually thinking of buying one of these beautiful vehicles, it is pretty hard to find out exactly what they sell for, but rest assured: if you need to ask, then you probably can’t afford it.

This is a list of street legal cars that are capable of 200 mph, and so far, the list has been completely full of vehicles that are powered by the traditional piston-powered petrol engines. But how can we give a list without mentioning a couple of cars that are a little outside of the box? First, the name Ferrari has always been synonymous with speed, but the powers that be there were never convinced about the whole concept of hybrid cars. That was until they introduced the SF90 Stradale. This venture into the future of motoring features a plug-in hybrid system linked to a V8 power plant. This combination produces a whopping 986 horsepower that will propel the car to a respectable 211 mph.

Then, there is the Tesla Roadster, the world first all-electric street legal car. To a lot of people, this is the future of motoring, but there is probably a way to go yet before we see the world’s transportation systems rely on electricity. It’s hard to talk about what the Tesla delivers in terms of horsepower, but the bottom line is that it will reach an extremely quiet 250 mph. With figures like 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, the future of motoring looks extremely electrifying.

This super-sleek and ultra-futuristic sports car is the latest in bold design from the German luxury automotive company, and it could be the supercar that the i8 was designed to be. This is no ordinary hybrid, either—it comes standard with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine hooked up to an electric drivetrain, and it can operate exclusively under either gas or battery power. That in and of itself isn’t what sets this vehicle apart—the gasoline engine produces a mind-boggling 600 horsepower, which makes this vehicle one of the most powerful hybrids in the world to date. With their innovative combination of crazy gas horsepower and responsive electric motors, BMW created a sports car that has the best of both worlds.
