A modern fortress of a home, built on a hill in Inner Mongolia, Redstone House is an organic addition to the surrounding natural beauty. Taking inspiration from the surrounding glow during periods of sun-drenched morning light, this post-modern dwelling has been designed using the actual direction of the sunlight as a guide. Also drawing on traditional Chinese architecture, the structure itself is made of multiple stone box-like compartments, which are connected by a series of stone corridors. The boxes vary in size and function, including spaces for dining, for bedrooms, living spaces, and entertainment hubs. The overall effect is that of an isolated space-station, with large glass panels intermitting between the stone walls to display stunning views of the surrounding barren Mongolian countryside.

The Warehouse district of New Orleans is home to some of the trendiest homes and hotels in the state, but Maison De La Luz has taken a step back to old country roots and included some Southern Charm in the latest re-design from Atelier Ace. A 1908 building that has been converted to house the 67-room guesthouse, this refuge from the external hustle is filled with antique and bespoke furniture pieces. Other details that add to this feeling of taking a step back in time include hand-embroidered linens, marble bathrooms and elaborate shower and door handles. Craft cocktails add a modern hip feel to the guests-only bar, situated in what was once the library of City Hall, while great tasting tea and coffee are also available in the lounge. All guests receive automatic access to the nearby Ace Hotel’s Three Keys music venue and rooftop pool, if the relaxing environment of Maison De La Luz becomes ‘too quiet’.

A mountainous Californian setting specifically chosen by the Brown Studio Inc. for their latest conceptual house design makes the perfect setting for the La Jolla House. The structure is inspired by Scandinavian farmhouses of centuries gone by, with a single-storey layout embellished by simple forms, clean lines and a contrastingly modern use of materials. It’s an iconically simple structure situated in a neighbourhood where complex and post-modern designs are taking precedent, making for a refreshing new outlook on the ‘Cali-living’ ideology. Open plan social areas are divided seamlessly by sliding glass doors linking the inner oasis to an outdoor deck area with a heated infinity pool. A second living space is also featured on the decking, with sofas, armchairs, warm lighting and a relaxed atmosphere creating a perfect environment to host guests and chill overlooking the stunning bay in the distance.
