Growing to appreciate watches is one of the signals of gentlemanly adulthood. Watches are, after all, the most utilitarian of all fashion accessories, and they allow for simultaneous feats of design and engineering.

Out of all luxury watch brands, however, Rolex has managed to become synonymous with timeless elegance and success. For the developing watch connoisseur, a Rolex can be the cornerstone of their watch collection easily. This means that buying a Rolex is an investment worth studying and is usually reserved to celebrate a major achievement or to announce to the world that you have reached your own standard of success.

This reputation did not come cheaply for Rolex, as they have cultivated the art of mass-producing tiny works of portable art for centuries. They have continuously expanded their offers and their market for years, but they have also continued to respect their customers enough to avoid compromising their quality standards.

Nevertheless, even the most affordable Rolex models are still major purchases for most of us. The rise of online shopping means that luxury timepieces are now available for more people than ever, but they have also chipped away at many of the rituals that accompany such a momentous purchase. Beyond the occasional clever forgery, many first-time Rolex buyers may not have the privilege of a personal shopping assistant to help them choose the right model.

This is why we have created this guide. As eager as we are to cork open the champagne and celebrate with you, we want to give you the tools to ensure your first Rolex will make you proud.

What Makes a Rolex a Rolex?

A Rolex is now widely understood to be a status symbol, but the brand’s legacy is much larger and vaster than that.

The Rolex house was founded in 1905 in London, although the main brains behind the operation – Hans Wilsdorf – was Swiss-born, bred, and trained. The company moved to Geneva only 14 years after its founding, but Wilsdorf aimed to represent the quintessential Swiss qualities of precision and innovation from the very start.

All the components and pieces on each Rolex watch are still made from scratch at one of their facilities in Switzerland. This includes the diminutive gears of the movement mechanism as well as all the gold, platinum, and steel. They have their own foundry. New advances in nanotechnology have permitted the brand to use computer-based calibrations when designing each new model, or when testing their final product. Most of the assembly, however, is still performed by hand by watchmakers trained in-house.

Despite the vast variety of models offered, there are certain characteristics that we can always expect from a genuine Rolex watch. All Rolex watches now have perpetual movement. They have a self-winding mechanism that uses wrist movement to power the watch. Because of the exacting precision of their hand-assembled mechanisms, the dials on a Rolex watch move smoothly and steadily, without any ticking.

In addition, their steel models all use 904L steel, which is the highest grade of steel used when constructing such small pieces. Most brands use 316L steel, which is softer and easier to handle, but also less exact. Their quality control procedures can only be described as obsessive, and include individual daily testing for at least two weeks across five positions.

All Rolex watches are certified Swiss chronometers, which only 3% of all Swiss luxury watches are. They were also the first to market a waterproof case – the Oyster.

Researching and understanding the brand’s history and achievements is key to appreciating what makes a Rolex special. It will also protect you from accidentally purchasing a convincing forgery.

Where to Buy a Rolex

Traditionally, brand new Rolex watches have been available through specialized or licensed jewelers around the world. Nowadays, you can also buy genuine Rolex watches online, via Amazon and many other retailers. Meanwhile, pre-owned Rolex pieces are often resold by private collectors or smaller retailers, which offers an extra opportunity for forgers to attempt to swindle an over-eager buyer.

Many cheap imitations are easily spotted, either because of garish colors, misprints on the box, or blatant imperfections in the casing or logos. However, expert forgers often use genuine Rolex parts to build their fakes, making them harder to spot. These may pass for the real deal at first, but give it a few years, and the eternal movement will prove short-lived, the apparent precision will fade away, and the scam will be obvious.

It is important to consider that Rolex watches are luxury, ageless pieces. Unlike some (not all) high-end cars, which will begin losing its value as soon as it leaves the dealership, the value of a Rolex often keeps or increases over the years. Many pre-owned Rolex watches are family heirlooms, so be wary of any “good prices” justified because the watch is used.

In addition, Rolex watches all have a unique serial number. You can check online if the serial number of the watch you are being offered matches the model and the metal. The way this number is engraved must be nothing less than perfect, so take a magnifying glass with you.

A true Rolex must be completely silent. And if the dial is marked as “Oyster,” it means you are looking at a waterproof model. Dunk it in water for a few seconds and check that nothing leaks inside the watch and that no new sounds are now audible.

Choosing Your First Rolex – What Are You Looking For?

Rolex watch models can be classified into three different styles, each one targeted at a specific type of occasion and customer.

Casual or sports Rolex models are often sold as entry-level models. They can cost as little as $5,000, which makes them a favorite among first-time buyers. Many of these, such as the Submariner line, are built to withstand deep sea diving.

Their construction tends to be a bit sturdier and the numbers on the dial are often larger. They are still Swiss luxury watches, but they will not look out of place during a casual evening out or at informal events. You can wear such a watch with a pair of jeans without fear of showing off.

If you are looking for the kind of investment watch that you wear frequently, then these are the ideal companions for you. If you do not need the high-tech resistance offered by the Submariner, try the slim silhouette and modern typography offered by the Explorer line, or bring the colors up a notch with a GMT Master.

The next step on the Rolex ladder falls into the business wear range. These models are halfway between the everyday-friendly and the white tie worthy models. Depending on the dress code required in your industry, this may be the watch you wear every day to work or the special one that you dust off to impress important clients.

These watches tend to skip the sports features and opt for calendars. Polished gold replaces sleek steel, and traditional typography or Roman numerals add an extra layer of class to the overall design. Some of the key models in this range include the Air King, the Daytona line, and the Datejust, which doubles as one of the most instantly recognizable silver Rolex models.

These tend to be sober watches, so combining them with your existing wardrobe should be easier than with sports or casual models. Nevertheless, if you want to maximize their versatility, take a good look at your tie clips, twins, and tie colors – or just buy new ones altogether. A brand-new Rolex is worth it.

High-end luxury models are rarely a watch lover’s first purchase. Not only can they cost over $15,000, but they tend to be made exclusively from precious metals (such as platinum, gold, or eternal rose gold) or gemstones. If you are looking for a family heirloom for your new empire, or want to ensure that your purchase becomes an investment that will increase in value, then these are the watches that you should aim for.

Most luxury Rolex models are produced in very small batches or as part of limited editions. We cannot mention high-end Rolex models without paying special homage to the President model, one of the highest prizes in the world of horology. The model’s official name is actually the Perpetual Day-Date, but they have been seen so often on the wrists of royalty, dignitaries, and American presidents to be inextricably linked with the allure of power, confidence, and elegance.

A President watch can cost over $30,000 easily. Certified pre-owned models can double this price, especially if they have belonged to a power broker or celebrity, or if the watch itself was worn during a famous or historical event. While this may seem an exaggeration, collectors are keenly aware that the Rolex Day-Date is a frequent guest at royal weddings and diplomatic summits. Naturally, these are watches worn on special occasions only.

Vintage, Pre-Owned, or Used: Is a Watch with a History Worth It?

Depending on the occasion, buying a pre-owned Rolex can detract from or enhance the intended message. However, these watches are often sold from a wider variety of places than brand new models, and, therefore, open the gates for more sophisticated concerns.

If you are buying your first Rolex to celebrate your own achievement or that of a loved one (such as a graduation, promotion, or award), used Rolex watches may not be the best idea. In such cases, the watch will probably be linked to someone else’s own success story, so the resulting effect of such a gift may not be as momentous as intended.

That being said, many vintage Rolex watches belong to limited editions and discontinued models, which can, therefore, increase their rarity and their value as an investment. If this is what you are going for, then ensuring you protect your investment is of the utmost importance.

A pre-owned Rolex should never be bought online, especially from an auction site. You want to have the chance to examine it in person and to have a professional watchmaker or valuator accompany you before you write any figures down.

Even an original pre-owned Rolex may have had a part replaced, or it could have been mistreated or poorly repaired in the past. This may not leave any visible signs, but it will undoubtedly affect the watch’s internal mechanisms.

If there is any sort of legend or historical event attached to the watch in question, then it is important to double check all information provided. Many reputable forums online will offer you the opportunity to cross reference the watch’s serial numbers or inquire about the seller’s credentials.

Whether you are celebrating your first major hit, consolidating your empire, or seeking to awe your new acquaintances, purchasing your first Rolex is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You are entering the big leagues, so it is important to treat this purchase with adequate respect. Rather than yielding to impulse, carefully examine the purpose of your new watch, the frequency with which you want to wear it, and your existing wardrobe.

More importantly, enjoy the process. Horology offers a unique combination of finery and engineering, so it deserves to be enjoyed every step of the way.

Unlike jogging or football, mountain biking is one of the few sports that can appeal to introverts and extroverts alike. As long as you have a keen eye for beauty, a determination to better yourself, or a deep longing for nature, conquering a mountain trail will hit all the right endorphin triggers.

Taking a bike ride within the city could be a great alternative to driving a car, depending on where you live. Riding your fixed gear bike to the mall, however, will never put you in touch with the clear, crisp mountain air, the incredible vistas, or the shy wildlife that you can find on a proper trail. And if there is one advantage to living in one of the widest and most geographically diverse countries in the world, it’s that there are “proper trails” for every taste.

There are glorious landscapes waiting to be explored all around the country. From rolling hills to rugged deserts and demanding, steep-wooded trails, we have ridden in all types of weather and through all types of ecosystems to bring you a glimpse of the very best that the country has to offer.

What Makes a Great Biking Trail – and a Great Expedition

Personally, we believe that versatility is the name of the game. Some of our readers are undoubtedly always seeking the harshest and most extreme environments, whereas others simply want an exhilarating activity to crown their vacation time. We have included a mix of easy, intermediate, and difficult trails – all in beautiful, yet accessible places. There will be a town to buy supplies nearby (there always is!) as well as the chance to hear nothing but you, your riding partners, and nature.

Naturally, when hitting the wilds, some precautions never go amiss. Helmets are not optional in the mountains and always make sure that somebody knows where you are going and when you can be expected to check in back in civilization. Experienced bikers are often the first ones to highlight that a spare GPS and extra provisions can save lives!

Best Mountain Biking Trails in Every Corner of the U.S.

Rankings are controversial, and we would hate to feed the rivalries. Plus, we know that not everyone can fly for 6 hours to ride for 4 – so we have organized these trails by region!

Bike paths included:

  • Santos Mountain Bike Path
  • Dupont State Forest Ridgeline Trail
  • Torry Ridge in Shenandoah Valley
  • Finger Lakes Trail
  • Kingdom Trails

Santos Mountain, Northern FloridaSantos Mountain Bike Path

Most of us think of Florida as relatively flat and swampy, but the Santos Mountain Bike Path located just outside of Ocala, in Northern Florida, offers 85 miles of epic scenery across Seminole land. Ideal for new bikers who are looking for their first real challenge, this area is blessed with sunny skies year-round.

The park is well served by a variety of bike shops, camping sites, and nearby parking facilities. It has extensive off-road trails as well as a new, mostly-shaded paved route ideal for those taking the family along for the ride. If you are an adventurer looking for a stiffer challenge, the trail’s relative altitude of 1200 feet and steep dirt hills won’t disappoint you.

As this is a relatively dry area, braces will not be necessary, so you’ll only need to pack your usual trail gear.

Dupont State Forest, North CarolinaDupont State Forest Ridgeline Trail

The North Carolina backcountry offers some of the best-preserved woods in the country and so is often chosen as the setting for adventure or historical movies. One of the best ways to embrace the settler living inside you is to traverse the Ridgeline Trail in Dupont State Forest, nestled between Transylvania and Henderson counties on the eastern ridges of the State.

The trails in this park wind over 100 miles long and include shaded dirt paths, daring hills, vast lakes, and oddly-familiar waterfalls. You might recognize some parts of the park from the original Hunger Games movie. The park itself has well-kept facilities and changing rooms as well as hospitable staff on hand in case of emergencies or other needs while you’re in the park.

Shenandoah Valley, VirginiaTorry Ridge in Shenandoah Valley

Virginia is a state full of well-kept secrets and has managed to keep its unexplored appeal all the way into the 21st century. Torry Ridge mountain trail is just now gaining country-wide popularity.

Located in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this expert-level trail is quite a bit shorter than many of the paths listed here. But don’t let that fool you; this is a demanding path that starts with a rough ascent of five miles before you can reach the first set of breathtaking vistas. Bring your best suspension and some rough, cushioned clothes. Most of the train is rocky and irregular.

The bigger the challenge, the bigger the reward, right?

Mt. Morris, New YorkFinger Lakes Trail

We continue our way north with a visit to deep New York State, more specifically to Mt. Morris. The Finger Lakes trail offers a whopping 950 miles of gravel, paved, and rocky roads, encompassing vertigo-inducing drops, mellow hills, creek crossings, and seemingly untouched forests.

If you can’t make up your mind about which section you’d like to explore, worry not; the biking trails meet the main road relatively often, so even if you can’t disappear camping for a week, you can squeeze in several good rides. The park authorities have taken care of providing extensive maps and accurate GPS markers to help guide your adventure.

East Burke, VermontKingdom Trails

New England is the home of collegiate gothic and bucolic, blue-blooded peace, but those who are looking for its more unpolished side cannot skip Kingdom Trails in East Burke, Vermont.

As befits any place near the Canadian border, Kingdom Trails is open only during the warmer half of the year. During hiking season, though, the small town of East Burke does its best to welcome visitors and hikers. Therefore, there is a great variety of food trucks close to the park’s Welcome Center. The staff can help you design your route depending on your skill level as this beautiful gem of a park has paths suited for every level of rider.

Heartland

Mountains may be scarce in the flat Midwest, but the further in you go, the closest you will get to some of the best adventure and mountaineering venues in the country.

Heartland bike paths included:

  • Hermosa Creek Trail
  • Bangtail Divide
  • Osberg Ridgeline Trail
  • The Whole Enchilada
  • Thunder Mountain

Hermosa Creek, Western ColoradoHermosa Creek Trail

Western Colorado offers surprisingly diverse scenery, and the outskirts of Hermosa show the best of every possible setting in the region. The Hermosa Creek Trail doesn’t have the meandering paths and hidden shoot-offs of the larger Eastern parks, but it still manages to pack hills, ascents, and delicious sunset vistas.

This area is known for being relatively wet year-round, so make sure you are prepared to deal with lots of dirt and mud. The biking trail itself is approximately 20 miles long, but the uneven terrain means that it may take up to 5 hours to traverse it. This short distance is enough to showcase creeks, rivers, a canyon, and even a bit of desert.

Bozeman, MontanaBangtail Divide

Montana may as well be called the Mountain State, and adventure sports fans always make sure to pay the land its due respect. The Bangtail Divide is one of the best places to do so if you are into conquering mountain bike trails.

Situated a short drive from Bozeman, the Bangtail Divide trail connects Stony Creek and Grassy Mountain through 24 miles of epic scenery, soft slopes, and relentless uphill sections. The area is mostly covered with movie-worthy pine, beech, and spruce trees. A favorite escape for hunters and fishers, the Bangtail Divide requires strong lungs and quick reflexes and, so, should be reserved for experienced bikers.

Idaho’s Sun ValleyOsberg Ridgeline Trail

Idaho’s Sun Valley is one of the top bike-friendly areas in the country. The town itself is populated by biking lovers, and as such, offers a wide variety of shops, repair services, and mountain trails nearby.

The Osberg Ridgeline is not the most difficult trail, nor is it the longest (it’s only 12 miles long), but it definitely offers some of the most beautiful opportunities to go off-road and explore the backcountry. Traffic is scarce, so the trail feels peaceful and isolated despite being very close to the town. Should you stick around the area for several days, you can easily visit any of the more than 30 miles of trails nearby.

UtahThe Whole Enchilada

As we head south back from Pine Tree country, the landscape turns dry and a bit grayer, but it never stops being gorgeous or demanding. The Whole Enchilada is actually a trail complex in Utah, connecting four distinct but easily-connected trails: Kokopelli, Burro Pass, Hazard Country, and Porcupine.

This is a bit of a high-altitude experience, so make sure your cardiovascular fitness level can cut the custard before braving the Whole Enchilada. If you’re not quite there yet, you can keep rolling along on the Porcupine.

The total loop is 62 miles long, so if you want to go for it, be prepared to camp. Bring extra water and cold weather clothes too. Temperature fluctuations can be unforgiving in this area.

Bryce Canyon Natural Park, UtahThunder Mountain

If you’d prefer to enjoy your Martian Red Sand with a little less breathtaking effort, Thunder Mountain is a great option as well. Close to Bryce Canyon Natural Park in Utah, this trail has much milder slopes and only the occasional steep drop. The trail also offers a lot more space than most of its woodsy counterparts, which makes it ideal for a group adventure.

Make sure to bring a camera because some of the natural rock sculptures that litter Thunder Mountain are just dying for a cheeky Instagram post. And make sure you bring a GPS device or navigator with you. This area is notoriously deserted despite being quite close to Salt Lake City, so you can’t count on running into anyone else if you lose your way.

Southwest

If all mountains looked the same, mountain trails would become boring indeed! So, if you are fond of warmer experiences, the Southwest offers a great opportunity to exchange woods and lakes for awe-inspiring deserts and canyons.

Bike paths included:

  • The Hangover
  • La Tierra Trail

Sedona, ArizonaThe Hangover

Not the movie – nor a place you want to visit when curing an actual hangover. The Hangover is a fairly extreme, otherworldly mountain bike trail located in Sedona, Arizona. Although it’s only 10 miles long, its red, clay-rich soils and extreme temperatures can offer a challenge that will make you feel like an absolute champion when finished.

Sunblock and extra fluids are not optional on this trail. An action camera, technically, is optional, but we strongly recommend you bring one. The shots you can take while sloping down The Hangover can be viral-worthy.

Santa Fe, New MexicoLa Tierra Trail

If The Hangover is a bit too extreme for you, La Tierra trail in Santa Fe, New Mexico offers a milder and greener landscape. The grounds include two separate biking and trekking trails and are both relatively well-marked and well-served without sacrificing the rugged appeal of the overall experience. If the day gets too hot, the nearby creek has a very inviting look for intermediate and experienced swimmers and kayakers.

Both La Tierra and the adjacent Big Loop are open throughout the year, thanks to the area’s well-known sunshine. The Big Loop is notably more difficult than La Tierra though. While a great test of endurance, it would escape the confines of a family outing.

Northwest

The northwest corner of the country is a beautiful contradiction of scorching deserts, high-tech hubs, and pristine woods. It offers great mountain bike trails with a side of consciousness.

Bike paths included:

Tahoe Rim Trail

McKenzie River Trail

Lost Valley Loop

Tahoe Rim Trail

The massive Tahoe Rim Park sits on the edge of California and Nevada and offers heights and highs alike for anyone who is willing to face its steep climbs. Lake Tahoe is one of the jewels of eastern California for a reason, and its rim trail system overlaps the Pacific Crest Scenic Reserve for several miles.

If this doesn’t provide enough recommendations for the beauty surrounding this trail, just take a look at the commitment shown by the park’s Trail Preservation Association. The volunteer stewards who take care of this park offer everything from weather alerts to First Aid courses and are happy to guide first-time visitors.

McKenzie River, State of OregonMcKenzie River Trail

The state of Oregon itself feels like one massive, eco-friendly biking trail sometimes, but the best scenery and most rewarding hills are all found around the McKenzie River. The trail covers 26 miles of some of the oldest woods on the continent, hidden lakes, and idyllic waterfalls.

This trail includes enough of an ascent to make winter gear worth the hassle. It is not uncommon for snow to fall on the upper parts of the trail as late as April.

Olympia, WashingtonLost Valley Loop

A name like Lost Valley screams adventure – and the peaks and woods around Lost Valley Loop and Capitol State Forest won’t disappoint in that regard, despite being located a stone’s throw from the city of Olympia, Washington.

Starting at Fall Creek, the Lost Valley Loop offers a great experience for intermediate and seasoned bikers alike. It is open year-round, although it’s best to cut the course at Mima Falls if you visit during the winter.

The post Scientific Studies Show Why Everyone Should Play Video Games appeared first on Improb.

]]>

If you grew up with parents who weren’t enthusiastic about you playing video games, chances are they used one or more of the following dangers to scare you away.

They make you anti-social. They damage your eyesight. They make you more violent.

People have had concerns over the physical and psychological impact video games have on us since they first became a popular form of entertainment more than three decades ago.

The difference between now and then is that many scientific studies have been conducted to see if video games truly have negative effects we should worry about. If what the average adult in the 90s said is true, video games really do make us dumber, asocial and unhealthy.

But what if playing video games can actually improve our lives by helping us both physically and mentally?

The following are some benefits that researchers are now saying video games can provide. Of course, it goes without saying that sitting in your chair playing video games for 10 hours a day might not be the best thing for you. The good news, however, is that video games are capable of helping us in so many ways that scientists are now suggesting that everyone should play them.

Video games help you learn

Perhaps the most popular and widely-believed myth about video games is that they make you, to put it bluntly, dumber. This belief might have been born from the fact that kids who spend too much time playing video games naturally find less time to do their homework and study.

This particular case concerns poor parenting skills more than anything, but parents who neglect to regulate their child’s game time see grades dropping and put the blame on video games.

How games affect the brain

brain games

According to recent research, playing video games (in moderation) can actually help us become better learners. One of the most convincing studies was performed by Dezhong Yao and a team who actually performed MRI scans of the brain on two groups: amateur gamers and expert gamers.

Since there was already plenty of evidence showing that expert action game players have enhanced cognitive abilities, amateurs were also tested to see if there was a noticeable difference.

While scanning the 30 amateur gamers and 27 expert gamers, Yao had the scans focus on networks within the insular cortex. This region of the mammalian brain includes cognitive functioning, including motor control and perception. While studying every gamer’s MRI scan, it became clear that of the two groups, it was the expert gamers who boasted superior functional connectivity in their brain hemispheres.

They also discovered that the expert gamers had more grey matter in their brains, especially in the central insular sulcus and left insular cortex. Since grey matter is associated with how fast the brain can process information, more of it means that the person is better at processing data. In other words, they are better at learning.

Action games and learning abilities

Researchers from Princeton University and the University of Rochester also sought to explore whether video games affect learning in a negative or positive way. What they found out was that people who play games with fast-paced gameplay tend to exhibit enhanced task performance and learning capabilities.

Their study involved a visual test that had both gamers and non-gamers identify the orientation of blurry shapes on a screen. While the pattern discrimination task proved difficult at first, all the participants got better and better as it went on. But, as anticipated, the action gamers performed better at identifying the shapes.

Even more interesting was their next test, which trained a group of people who spent little to no time playing games. Half of the group played fast-paced games like Call of Duty for 50 hours while the other played slower, less active games like The Sims. Both groups then took the same visual test as before, with the ones who played the action games doing much better.

A mental boost

Although research into how video games affect our learning abilities is still very new, there’s no denying the results. With each new study, we find that playing video games can improve certain skills like multi-tasking, perception and learning. Now you can play your favorite games knowing that each time you play, you might just be boosting your mental abilities while also having fun.

Video games make us better decision-makers

infographic-how-gaming-is-affecting-our-culture-and-health

[Infographic source] Good Magazine

If there’s one skill that we all want to keep improving, it’s decision making. No matter what you end up doing for a living, whether it be a secular job, military or stay-at-home, the ability to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of several choices is important. Fortunately, gamers can breathe a sigh of relief; new studies have only served to confirm that playing video games can help us make better decisions, faster.

How games help you make decisions

Looking to see if fast-paced games can help us think and react faster, C. Shawn Green, PhD, conducted an impressive study during his stay at the University of Rochester, N.Y. Since video games require a player to view constantly-moving peripheral images, Green sought to prove that active gamers were better at receiving sensory data and translating it into accurate decisions.

His theory was that this ability, which in brain labs is called “probabilistic inference,” is enhanced by playing video games because it forces us to make better decisions based on what we are able to see and hear. As Green puts it:

Our eyes don’t take in everything and our ears don’t either, so you take the sensory data that you have, and make a decision based on the probability of being right.

Green had two groups made up of people between the ages of 18 and 25. One part of the volunteers were tasked with playing 50 hours of fast-paced video games while the other played slow-paced games. Afterward, both groups were given a decision-making test. The first involved determining whether moving white dots were going left or right, and the second had them wear headphones and guess if a single pitched tone sounded in their left ear or right ear.

Consistent with other similar studies, Green discovered that the action gamers performed much better. This is because action games like first-person shooters can actually change our brains by enhancing some of our low level perceptual functions involved with hearing, smelling and seeing. Shooting, aiming, running and other actions force players to make decisions and press the gaming controller buttons accordingly.

Improving your cognitive abilities

The problem that people find when it comes to these studies is that unlike randomized controlled trials, they often involve specific subjects: gamers and non-gamers, action gamers and slow-paced gamers, etc. Most of these studies also hint at a higher cognitive performance from people who are neither non-gamers or avid gamers. Thus, while games can help us make better decisions faster, don’t forget to perform other healthy activities that serve to improve your cognitive abilities as well.

Some games help us stay fit and healthy

Another widespread danger associated with playing video games is health problems. Since most video games require no more than the movement of your fingers, it’s easy to understand why.

While it’s safe to assume that someone spending several hours a day playing games is probably not getting a healthy dose of physical exercise, this doesn’t mean that games can’t help us stay fit. With the advent of motion controls, games have recently become a great way to burn calories, increase your heart rate and even shed off extra pounds.

Video games as a moderate exercise alternative

gaming-is-good-for-you

Concerned about younger gamers, scientists from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center decided to test if games can serve as a good form of exercise.

They targeted a young age group since recent generations have exhibited higher risks of diabetes and obesity due to the advent of activities that require little to no movement: social media, texting, watching Netflix, etc.

Kevin Short, Ph.D, the principal investigator on the project, had his researchers measure the energy expenditure, self-reported exertion and heart rate of children between the ages of 10 and 13. Subjects were monitored while performing three separate activities: playing active video games like Wii Sports and Dance Dance Revolution, watching television and walking on a treadmill at three different speeds.

Dr. Short and his team were pleased to discover that playing motion-control games was comparable to walking at a speed of 3.5mph. Both these tasks resulted in two to three times more calories burned than while watching television. Higher heart rates, energy expenditure rates and perceived exertion were also elicited.

Researchers from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville also sought to prove that while playing regular video games all day isn’t good for our health, active games are a different story. Their study also involved younger volunteers who were asked to keep two accelerometers, one on their hip and the other on their wrist. The kids participated in two events: 20 minutes of playing Kinect Adventures for Xbox 360 and 20 minutes of unstructured outdoor playtime.

Hollie Raynor, director of UT’s Healthy Eating and Activity Laboratory, and her colleagues found that playing the Kinect video game resulted in a higher percentage of moderate to vigorous intensity. Raynor believes that unlike playing outside, Kinect Adventures! encourages a wider range of body motions by offering fun challenges with goals worth achieving, at least in the eyes of children.

Good for you but not a substitute

Even though certain games have proved good for our health, you should still go outside for some physical exercise; this goes for both children and adults. Fresh air and sunshine are just a few of the many benefits of outdoor physical activity that isn’t offered by video games.

But in places where it gets too cold to go outside, it’s nice knowing that you can still get a workout without ever leaving your house. Best of all, motion games let you burn those calories while climbing mountains, running through forests and enjoying other virtual settings.

Video games help foster stronger relationships

Respect, trust, communication—these are only a few of many factors that go into forming a strong and healthy relationship. One of the most important of these, which unfortunately is not being met by couples forced to both work full-time in today’s economy, is spending time together. Whether it’s relaxing in front of the television set or running together, couples who find time for one another are more likely to “make it.”

A great way to have fun and relax

having fun playing video games

Howard Markman, a psychologist from the University of Denver, agrees that the time invested in fun and relaxation greatly affects the happiness between a couple.

The researcher claims that this part of a relationship is more important for the man than it is for the woman. As most male gamers will say, what better way to spend stress-free time with your significant other than by playing games?

Marksman’s long-term study, which began in 1996, doesn’t actually involve video games themselves. Instead, he and co-director Scott Stanley created a fun and friendship scale with various statements such as “We regularly have great conversations where we just talk as good friends.”

Nearly 200 couples in their second year of marriage were asked to select the statements that they felt applied to their relationship. They were then asked how often they shared in exciting activities, as well as fun, relaxing activities.

If there’s one activity that offers both fun and no stress, it’s video games. Gamer couples are usually more than anxious to brag about how great their relationship is thanks to the time they spend playing Mario Kart, an online MMORPG or any other game that lets them play together. The best part is that video games is something that also allows the couple to talk as well, which studies show is important for women during this shared free time.

Video games help kids do better in school

Video-games-help-kids-learn-

Like other popular forms of entertainment, video games are always deemed responsible whenever a child starts bringing home low test scores and homework assignments marked incomplete. We won’t argue that a child who plays Playstation 4 from the moment they get home to just before bed probably isn’t going to excel in their studies.

However, the latest research has shown us that unlike television, which is another pastime linked to poor academic performance when done in excess, video games might actually help kids pay more attention in school.

Paying attention in class

In a previous section, we covered a study where a group of expert action gamers were shown to possess more gray matter volume in areas of the brain related to attention and sensorimotor networks. To add to these studies, Vikranth Bejjanki and a group of colleagues documented their results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences after performing their own tests.

Curious to see if first person shooters were capable of boosting our attention, cognition and perception, the team conducted a series of experiments on small groups of gamers. These showed that gamers with previous video game experience excelled at perceptual tasks, including pattern discrimination, when compared to the non-gamers. Similar to other studies, the team then had the non-gamers play games for several hours before retaking the tests.

As expected, subjects did much better the second time. Findings such as these have led to theories suggesting that video games may be a better way of teaching than our more traditional methods. Video games can be both fun and stimulating, which means that students will pay more attention. The fact that they are interactive also helps us focus, because solving challenges serves to create a more stimulating environment than chalk and a blackboard.

Video games even improve math skills

But what about math, a subject that many students tend to have difficulty with? In a recent study done by Stanford University, results actually showed that kids who played video games for only 10 minutes a day saw their math skills improve significantly. Since third grade is when students start learning valuable mathematics such as geometry, fractions and multiplication, tests were done on subjects from this group.

The volunteer group was asked to play a particular video game for no more than 10 minutes a day, three days a week, for one month. This game was Wuzzit Trouble, a digital math game developed by Brainquake designed to serve as a fun way of building children’s math skills. A second group was involved in the study, but were not given the instruction to play the game.

After a series of tests, the gamer group that played Wuzzit Trouble did 20.5 percent better than the other group. Of course, the researchers clarified that their study doesn’t prove that any and all games improve math skills. The gamer kids got better at math because they were playing a mobile math game; if it had been Pokemon or Clash of Clans, the results might not have been as impressive.

Video games as today’s educational tool

While games like Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed will continue being the top-sellers at the end of the year, there are still plenty of great educational games worth checking out. Many of them are not only useful for helping kids have fun while learning, but they are often beneficial for adults as well. This is why Nintendo’s Brain Age titles proved such a success just before mobile games became so huge.

The next time someone tells you that video games make us pay less attention in school, you can share what the latest studies actually have to say about games as an educational tool.

Video games might make you more social

Even if games have the power to keep us in shape and make us better learners, it might not matter if they also turn us into modern-day hermits. We’re talking about people who spend so much time in front of a screen that their social and psychological wellbeing suffers because of it.

Although there are studies that show excessive video game playing can form negative behaviors, there are just as many convincing us that games aid in promoting our social skills.

How video games improve our ability to form friendships

Researchers from the Queensland University of Technology wanted to see how playing games affects a young person’s ability to build healthy relationships.

Does playing video games make us lazier and more aggressive toward others, or can they actually have the opposite effect?

Daniel Johnson, director of QUT’s games and research and interaction design lab, had this to say after the tests:

We are seeing clear evidence of improvements in mood, stress reduction, increased feeling of competence and autonomy and really strong feelings of being connected with the people they are playing with.

Dr. Johnson claims this is because today’s average games evoke a sense of cooperation between players, especially in competitive games that put players in the same team. He also went on to say that parental involvement and regulated playtime determines the influence games have on younger players. In other words, playing 10 hours a week with friends and family may not have the same effect as the teenager locked in his room playing World of Warcraft 40 hours a week.

Online gaming doesn’t make you a loner

Studies done by three separate universities also support the idea that gamers, mainly those who play massively multiplayer online games, aren’t all antisocial. In fact, the researchers from York University, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and North Carolina State University all saw that only a small group of online players demonstrate poor social behavior and negative attitudes.

This study involved going to more than 20 gaming events in the UK and Canada regions and observing the gamers there. These events ranged from competitions hosting thousands of players to local bars with only two dozen people. As researchers watched how the players responded to one another in a live social setting, they were surprised by their highly social demeanor.

Instead of being the antisocial nerds so often depicted in movies and television, they were talking and drinking just like any other group of people. These results matched another study done by Penn State researchers, who found that gamers who use games as a way of forming social bonds boasted stronger relationships than the average person.

Antisocial basement dwellers are the minority, not majority

We can all think of someone who receives little to no real social interaction all because they’re constantly glued to their PC monitor or TV set. While games, like any other entertainment mediums, can be addicting enough to turn us into antisocial people, they can also help us form strong friendships.

As more and more people start playing games, mostly due to the advent of smartphone and web browser gaming, we’re confident that the “all gamers are introverts” stereotype will go away.

Video games don’t make you sexist or violent

Video-games-and-violence-

Of all the dangers associated with video games, the claim that they make you more aggressive and disrespectful toward women is a clear favorite. The news media especially prefers blaming games whenever a school shooting or other violent event occurs, conveniently ignoring the fact that most movies and television shows today show just as much (if not more) violence.

That anyone would believe playing Grand Theft Auto makes you a violent criminal but watching Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead doesn’t affect you in any way, to the average gamer, is silly.

No connection between games and sexism

Only a few months ago (as of this writing), a German longitudinal study was conducted to see if there really was a link between sexist attitudes and gaming. The published study showed that, contrary to popular belief, gamers did not demonstrate higher levels of sexism.

Designed around the cultivation theory, the study sought to prove if long exposure to certain media content, in this case video games, can impact how we perceive the world and others. As a longitudinal study, it was done over a lengthy period of time—over a few years, to be exact.

Far from confirming that games evoke sexism, the researchers were surprised to find how far the industry has gone in representing females in a respectable way. One of the better examples is Samus Aran from Metroid Prime, who doesn’t don a skimpy outfit to save the planets she explores.

Video games don’t increase aggression

Tackling another common but disputable theory, Oxford University conducted a study to see if games really make kids more violent. Its goal was not only to see if certain types of games affect a child’s behavior, but if the amount of time they spend playing games does, if at all.

The study involved interviewing more than 200 British school children around the ages of 10 and 11. They were asked about their playing schedule and habits, including their favorite kinds of games. At the same time, teachers were tasked with assessing the children’s behavior and ability to cope with problems in the classroom.

While more than half the kids said they play games on a daily basis, only the ones who played for more than three hours a day demonstrated higher aggression and did poorer academically. Even more interesting was the fact that the type of game they played was irrelevant; what mattered was how long they played games each day.

Video games are easy to blame

It’s no surprise that video games are a favorite target today when a child starts misbehaving or a person shows signs of sexism. Although there are still plenty more studies to be done, it’s good to see that the latest ones are showing that there is no solid connection. But as Oxford’s research showed, playing games in excess as opposed to in moderation might encourage negative behaviors in not just younger players, but adults as well.

Video games still have much to prove

Most of you reading this probably grew up with video games your entire lives, whether it was in arcades, with computer games or on a home gaming console. However, it’s important to realize that games as an entertainment medium is still quite in its infancy, especially when compared to film and television. Because of this, there is still so much to learn about how video games really affect us as people.

But as you may have seen while going through each study, video games are just as capable of helping us as they are of hurting us. While playing Wii Sports and Brain Age may help us exercise our body and mind while we game, sitting for 10 hour marathons each day, no matter what game you play, probably isn’t the best thing.

Now that we’re seeing the positives that video games have to offer, the best thing we can do is figure out how games can help us individually. This includes regulating our own time and deciding which games are right (or wrong) for us.

]]>

We want all of our finest attire to last and look impeccable every time we put it on, but that’s not always realistic. Things get worn, they get tattered, they get dirty. What if you could restore them back to – or at least close to – that time you first put it on? In some cases, such as your canvas jacket, you can.

how to rewax a waxed cotten jacket

Canvas jackets have a long history behind them and have been a complexity of male attire for quite some time. Over the years, we’ve perfected the methods of re-waxing canvas jackets, restoring them to their original look and feel; but you won’t have to re-wax your jacket often.

Having come around during the 19th century, canvas jackets were designed to last even in the harshest of conditions. Intended to protect the wearer from the cold, waxed canvas jackets were constructed specifically for warmth, though they’ve become more of a novelty in the modern age. More-so than many other article of clothing, waxed canvas jackets are timeless and fascinating entries in the long history of fashion.

Ever wonder where your canvas jacket may have originated from? Well, it all started with the deep blue…

Waterproofing History

How did the waxed canvas jacket come about? It all dates back to the early 19th century and started with a keen observation of the flax-based fabric of the clipper and merchant ship seals. On the high seas, the sails would become wet and wind up catching the wind better. The more water they took on, the faster the ship seemed to sail as air could not pass through the saturated fabric. Keeping in mind that the sails needed to be wet to be at their most effective, sailors considered the possibility of waterproofing them while retaining the ability to better catch wind and sail at higher speeds.

It all dates back to the early 19th century and started with a keen observation of the flax-based fabric of the clipper and merchant ship seals.

To do so, the concept to cure the fabric with Linseed oil came about. Unlike sails saturated with water, those cured with Linseed would remain lightweight, making them just as easy to hoist and release as when the sails were dry. Now, it seems like there’s still a long ways to go until the concept of curing fabric with Linseed oil to waterproof it to go from ship sails to jackets, but sailors were much smarter back then than they get credit for.

history of waxed cotton

Noticing how much more efficient the sails were after being waterproofed, sailors then turned to their attire. What if they could wear normal clothing and avoid getting bogged down by water saturation? With a possible answer to the dilemma, 19th century fisherman developed the first slicker jacket, though there were still improvements to be made.

Linseed oil calcified fabrics, making them even more difficult to move in than when they were waterlogged. No matter the original color of the fabric, Linseed oil also caused it to yellow overtime, giving garments an unclean and old look. Fisherman were also having issues with flax, the material used to waterproof linen canvas clothing and wound up turning to cotton canvas materials.

The lighter and cheaper cotton remained soft, unlike flax, and was easy to maneuver in regardless of the conditions. Gradually, cotton canvas replaced flax and was constructed in two ply while retaining its softer, malleable qualities. To keep it as such, Linseed oil was set aside for Paraffin wax, which prevented fabric stiffening and yellowing. With that revelation, the waxed canvas jacket was born and has been a popular option well into the modern age. During World War II, the British Armed Forces turned to the waxed canvas jacket, making it the only army to wear waterproof clothing.

Long after the war, waxed canvas has become a staple of fashion, popping up in trends across generations. One crowd that constantly turns to waxed canvas jackets are motorcyclists. It’s a testament to the durability of the jacket to be favoured by people who, at any moment, could find themselves scraping against asphalt.

If there’s one thing every owner of a waxed canvas jacket will agree on, it’s that re-waxing it is essential to lasting wearing. Reapplying wax ensures that the jacket retains its waterproof qualities and continues to have that staple look expected from waxed canvas.

Should you go the route of a waxed canvas jacket, caring for it can be a little more involved than your typical windbreaker, but the lasting effects are well worth the extra work.

How to Re-Wax Your Canvas Jacket

It may sound like one of those tasks that takes two seconds and you’re done, but re-waxing a canvas jacket is a little bit of a process. First of all, you’re going to need four essential supplies that you should be able to find easily. Then, there’s the actual process, which is a four-step ordeal that requires patience and care.

how to rewax a canvas jacket

The Necessary Supplies

Before you even think about waxing your canvas jacket, you’ll need these four items:

     1. Wax

A no-brainer necessity. There are several different brands and kinds of wax you can buy, which we’ll get into a little later on. While the decision is partially based on preference, you may find that people tend to lean toward paraffin wax. If you go with paraffin, you also want to invest in a mask as it’s known to give off pollutants that can be harmful when inhaled.

No matter the type of wax, always re-wax your jacket in a well-ventilated room.

     2. Heat Gun/Hair Dryer

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, so long as it is a steady and direct heat source.

     3. Bristle Scrub Brush/Lint Roller

Don’t buy a steel brush or anything with bristles that don’t move against the fabric. If the brush is too stiff, soften it up a bit so it’s softer and easier on your jacket.

Your standard lint roller will work, but avoid one of those fabric shavers.

     4. Clean Cloth

Just a soft cloth that will be used to wipe off excess wax. Doesn’t need to be anything fancy.

The Re-Waxing Process

With your wax chosen and supplies purchased, you’re ready to get down to business. Follow these steps carefully and to a “T” and your jacket will come out looking brand new.

filson wax

Cleaning Your Garment

Before you do anything, make sure your jacket is clean. That means removing any signs of lint and debris to prevent it from getting caught in the wax. Whatever you do, don’t toss your jacket into a washing machine and don’t use any detergents or soaps while scrubbing it.

Applying the Wax

Once the jacket is free from all debris, it’s time to go old school and apply the wax. The process is slow and requires care. Your jacket is delicate, so the process of applying the wax should be as well. Using the cloth, rub heated wax onto the jacket, making sure to coat the entirety of the exterior. Since wax keeps your jacket waterproof, you want to hit every inch of the canvas, including at the seams and all nooks. Avoid getting wax on the interior of pockets.

heating wax for canvas jacket

Heating Your Jacket

When you’re satisfied with your wax application, take the heat gun or hair dryer and turn it to its lowest setting. Evenly run the dryer or gun over the jacket, making sure to heat every inch of it. Once the wax appears to be dry, hang the jacket up and let it sit in a dry, warm area for up to 24 hours.

The Test Run

It’s time to see if all your hard work paid off. As mentioned previously, if you properly re-waxed your jacket, it should repel liquids. Spray water on it to make sure the droplets roll off the canvas and don’t get soaked in. The canvas should also retain a glossy sheen if the wax dried properly.

The Best Waxes for Your Canvas Jacket

Now that you know what you’re doing, let’s take a look at some of the wax products you should be doing it with.

Otter Wax

This all-natural alternative to Paraffin wax prevents the pollutants and comes in a convenient, easy-to-apply bar shape. With Otter Wax you can forego the cloth and just rub the wax bar against your jacket for easy application. The all-natural finish provides the same sheen without any chemical agents. Check it here.

Barbour Dry Wax

Don’t want to deal with a tin of sticky wax? Barbour Dry Wax comes in bar form so application is a breeze. The bar makes it easy to hit those hard-to-reach spots and is a bit more efficient than dealing with a cloth. Check it here.

Fjallraven Greenland Wax

Made from 65% Paraffin and 35% beeswax, Greenland Wax is a trusted product with a powerful mixture that’s surprisingly safe for the environment. Fjallraven doesn’t sacrifice function for environment friendly and shares the same great qualities of Paraffin without the toxic aftermath. Check it here.

Filson Oil Finish Wax

A popular wax for those that know what they’re doing, Filson Oil Finish Wax is a traditional Paraffin, much like that used in the olden days. The durable finish is long-lasting, proving that just because a formula is old, doesn’t mean it’s outdated. Check it here.

The post How to Make a Bug Out Bag – Essential Checklist appeared first on Improb.

]]>
This post is dedicated to ensuring that everyone has an idea of how to make a bug-out bag for emergency purposes.

What is a bug-out bag? A bug-out bag is backpack you have stocked and ready to go any time you need to bug out / clear the area / get the hell out of dodge, etc. It has everything you need to survive a disaster for the first 3 days. You simply grab your bug-out bag and do your best to get to safety.

The Uniqueness of Your Bug-Out Bag

The first step in making a perfect bug-out bag is making an excellent, comprehensive bug-out bag list. It is not compulsory for everything on our list to be in your bag, but the list will give you the knowledge of the important contents to have in your bag.

Our main aim is to offer you the information you need to at least have the knowhow on where to begin. There is too much information about bug-out bags on websites, being both correct and incorrect. This post will help you find the correct way of starting out.

Since you know yourself and what you need on a daily basis, your bug-out bag list should be very easy to come up with. It should not only be fun and exciting, but it should also put your mind at ease because you know that you are planning in advance to survive any disaster that might come your way. Simply think through your day and write down everything that you need during a typical day. What other items would you need if you were camping? If it were especially cold, hot, or wet outside? Write down everything that you can think of.

It’s difficult to think of everything, though. So, whether you have made a bug-out bag before or this is your first experience, we hope you will learn a thing or two from the points below.

The Perfect Bug-Out Bag

The three major considerations when picking out a bag are size, durability, and functionality.

You’ll want a bag that can fit everything you need, so don’t even try to pick out a bag until you’ve made your bug-out bag list and assembled your supplies. Of course, you’ll try to purchase items that are as small and compact as possible, but you won’t know how large of a bag you’ll need until you gather all your essentials.

You’ll also need a bag that can survive any type of weather conditions. A bag that will soak through or tear easily might not do you much good. You’ll want to pay special attention to the fabric to ensure that it can protect its contents and remain wearable for the duration of the emergency.

Finally, you’ll need a bag that is easy to use. One giant compartment isn’t practical. You don’t want to spend a lot of time searching for something at the bottom of the bag when you need it. A bag with many pockets and compartments will be much more convenient.

Look for our recommendations for specific bug-out bags in a future post.

The Bug-Out Bag Essentials

Here’s everything the average person needs. But like we said, feel free to add your own requirements or nix anything we suggest that doesn’t’ apply to you.

Water, Filtering, and Drinking Materials

A bug-out bag’s most important essentials are related to keeping the body well supplied with water. This is because you can go up to 3 weeks without food, but you can only withstand a lack of water for 72 hours. Water must therefore be present in your bug-out bag, the minimum amount being one liter per day, per person.

Below are water-carrying items that we recommend.

It is also highly recommended to have a Lifestraw or two. Life straws are compact, lightweight lifesavers that aid in water filtration. You can use them to filter out 99.9% of microbes and bacteria in water. This means that you do not have to worry about boiling or treating the water that you might find before drinking it. Another wonderful feature of the company that makes Lifestraws is that it helps provide clean water for poorer countries. They do this by ensuring that with every purchase, they offer filtration products.

Food and Food Preparation Materials

Food is also an important must-have in the bug-out bag. The preparedness community urges people to stock off-the-shelf and store bought items that are dehydrated. Contrary to these products, we recommend a variety of foodstuffs. They should be non-perishable and you should combine foods that require water with those that don’t. Since you do not know how scarce water might be in certain types of emergencies, it is important to have more foods that don’t require adding water than those that do.

At the moment, most of the foods we recommend are self-explanatory, but in the future, when we conduct in-depth reviews of the bug-out bags, we will expound on our reasons for selecting the items below. Note that the amount of food you pack in your bug-out bag should be enough to last for three days. Instead of using plastic cookware, we recommend the use of metal utensils and cookware because they are good heat resistors and therefore more durable than the plastic options.

Clothing

When choosing clothing for your bug-out bag, ensure that you pick tolerant clothes that will be able to maintain your body temperature at optimum levels at all times. We have listed a good number of weather-friendly clothes that will help you maintain a constant body temperature.

It is important to select the clothes you will need considering the various climatic conditions in your area. To save space, you should check your bag every six months and trade out your supply of clothes appropriate to the season. Remember to pack clothes for wet conditions or items that will protect you from other types of weather in your area.

Have two sets of clothes for every day. Doing so will help ensure that you will have a dry set of clothes in case you get wet. Wet clothes are very uncomfortable and they can cause dangerous body temperature fluctuations.

Shelter and Bedding

For shelter and bedding, we recommend materials that are lightweight and compact, and can therefore be comfortably carried by a backpacker. These items might seem excessive and extreme for a person with survival experience, but they are completely necessary.

Instead of sleeping in a thicket while using a pile of leaves as a pillow, you will have ability to sleep more comfortably with the items we recommend. This is due to the fact that resting comfortably, both physically and mentally, helps relieve a lot of stress when times are tough. You’ll be thankful for the better sleep when you need to be alert and keep up your endurance in an emergency situation.

Heat Source

It is very important to have several means of starting a fire when you’re relying on your own resources for survival. One method might fail to start a fire, and if you do not have backup, it will be difficult to survive, especially if it’s cold out. The basics below should be included in your bug-out bag. Three are recommended because the probability of all of them failing on you is very low.

  • Tinder (qty. 3)
  • Source of Ignition (qty. 3)
  • Waterproof storage for the heat sources

First Aid Supplies

Unfortunately, most emergency aid kits do not have the capacity to work as a survival kit because the equipment available in them is not meant for use when there is no other medical facility available. First aid is a larger topic for another day, but in this situation, there is one first aid tool that we highly recommend, and it is listed below. Of course, don’t limit yourself to our recommendations. This is your bug-out bag, and you might need items in your area that we haven’t included in our list.

And don’t forget any prescription medications or medicines that you need to take on a regular basis. This is another item in your bug-out bag that you will need to refresh every six months. You don’t want to be in an emergency situation and discover that the prescription medicine you packed in your bug-out bag expired. You need to be in the best condition possible when an emergency strikes, so taking care of any medical conditions you have should be among the highest priorities.

Personal Hygiene Supplies

A lack of personal hygiene leads to bacterial infections which eventually lead to a deterioration in your health. Bugging out is not an exception to the rule to take of yourself. Most people forget some essential personal hygiene materials, so we have listed the most essentials items to pack.

  • Toilet Paper designed for traveling (qty. 2)
  • Toothbrush and Tooth Paste in the appropriate size for traveling
  • Floss
  • Small Pack Towel
  • Hygiene/Signal Mirror
  • Napkins
  • Sanitizer
  • Camp Soap
  • Tampons and Pads
  • Deodorant

Tools

Besides weapons, people also fancy purchasing many different types of tools. After all, you never know what you might need. But you cannot pack everything into your bug-out bag. Choose the most important ones that suit the environment you are in and forget the others unless you have extra room. We recommend the following three tools that are a must-have for your bug-out bag.

In this post, we are only mentioning these tools, but they will be detailed in another post later on, so please stay tuned. But for now, the following tools will be necessary in most situations, and they should fit perfectly in your bag.

Illumination

You can’t see very well in the dark, and you never know when you’re going to keep traveling once darkness falls. Like fire sources, we recommend having multiple sources of Illumination in case you lose one or one or two fail. The batteries are the common denominator and they should never be forgotten. All the items listed below serve the same purpose, even though they have multiple uses.

  • Batteries to power various light sources
  • Mini LED Keychain Flashlight
  • Candles
  • Mini LED Flashlight
  • Headlamp
  • Light Glow Sticks

Communication Devices

The following equipment could come in handy when you want to communicate on a bug-out. Though in some scenarios, you might not want to use the items listed below, it would be best to have them in the situations where it’s safe to do so.

Travel Aids

For navigation purposes, it is important to have the following items in your bag because you never know the situation you might find yourself in. They can help you find or buy your way in a variety of conditions.

  • Compass
  • $500 Minimum in Small Bills
  • Local Area Map
  • Gold/Silver Bullion Coins
  • Emergency Whistle
  • Quarters (qty. 8)
  • Small Note Pad and Pencil

Self Defense

Self-defense is a sensitive discussion, and from what we have witnessed and experienced, American preppers focus most on this category.

And, yes, bugging out is essentially a survive-or-die situation. If you find yourself out in the wild, you will need to survive. We hope it never comes to human vs. human conflict, but whatever the threat, you must have some equipment to help defend yourself. Below are some of the most important items we would recommend that you include in your bug-out bag essentials.

If you prefer not to carry a weapon, or if are not authorized to carry one, you will need to have some experience in training, especially If you are the leader of a group of people who expect you to protect and keep them safe.

With time, we plan on writing more posts on the self-defense topic. For now, here are the basics.

Miscellaneous

These are the items that do not fall under the categories that we mentioned above, but they are also important to include in your bug-out bag if you have the room.

  • Cotton Bandana
  • N95 Face Mask
  • Condoms (non-lubricated)
  • 550 Parachute Cord (50′)
  • Sunglasses
  • Duct Tape (25’)
  • Binoculars
  • Sewing Kit
  • Re-Sealable Bags (qty. 5, various sizes)
  • Latex Tubing (3’)
  • Face Paint
  • 55 Gal. Contractor Garbage Bag (qty. 2)
  • Fishing Kit
  • Military Surplus Survival/Snare Wire

We have consulted a good number of experts to make sure we’ve listed the best educational information there is about what you’ll need in an emergency situation. But, we understand that there might be some things on this list that you won’t ever need in your area. There also might be some things that you’ll never use, even if you had a need for them. That’s okay. Customize this list for your environment and ethics.

As much as we recommend items in the above list, we do not consider it final. You know yourself better, and it is equally important for you and your loved ones to decide what items you want to include in your bug-out bags.

Note that your bugging bag is not enough to protect you from death. It only serves to give you the best chances of survival in a bad situation. In order to make maximum use of the items in your bug-out bag, you need to know how to use them. Practice using them regularly in preparation for the actual emergency. Otherwise, your bug-out bag will be useless.

As a final word of advice for this post, we need to emphasize that a bug-out bag is not a family bag. Each person, even small children, should have their own bag with their own items. That way, whoever survives the initial disaster can take their bag and get out. You don’t want your bag filled with another’s belongings or items that you can’t use. And you don’t want to spread your materials too thin by trying to carry everything that your whole family needs in one bag. You won’t be able to fit as much as you will actually need for more than one person. Personalize and pack bug-out bags for each member of your family to give everyone the best chance of survival.

If you keep in mind that emergency preparedness is a way of life and not a hobby, you’ll always be prepared for any situation.

The post How To Buy the Right Size Watch for your Wrist | 5 Rules You Need To Know appeared first on Improb.

]]>
If you’ve ever gone wristwatch shopping, you know what a nightmare it can be choosing between the abundance of different watches out there. Long-gone are the days of buying the $5.99 rubber-banded watch with your favorite movie character on it.

Now you have to worry about which case diameter works best for you, does your wrist look good with a larger band or something thinner, are you better suited for thicker glass or a thinner casing, and what about the material of the band itself? What about a more complex style? Who knew there were so many things to consider when it comes to buying wristwatches?

Well, we did, actually, which is why we want to lay out these five rules you should follow and keep in mind the next time you’re shopping for your next watch. Before you settle on a choice, run through these guidelines to make sure it will fit your wrist size best.

Finding the Right Case Diameter

Whether your wrist is on the larger or smaller end of the spectrum, you’ll want to pay attention to the diameter of the casing. For adult sizes, you’ll typically find casing sizes ranging from 40 mm to around 56 mm, and while you may be tempted to get a larger watch face to show off your new accessory, a casing that’s too big can look, well, a little comical.

A good rule of thumb to follow is to keep the watch lugs or the two points that extend from the casing and keep the band in place, from overlapping the width of your wrist. Since these are rarely considered in the diameter of the watch, it’s best to get a visual reference of the size as some lugs can be longer than others regardless of the casing size.

When it comes to smaller watches, especially those at or below 36 mm, you can get into more feminine or even vintage territory.

 width=

What Size Casing?

Beyond even worrying about the diameter of the casing, you also will want to take into consideration the width. Generally, it’s difficult to get a wider diameter case that isn’t also incredibly thick, but you’ll likely find that “rule” being thrown out the window as watch technology is further tweaked in the near future.

When it comes to overall thickness of the case, you can find watches ranging anywhere from 6 mm all the way up to 15mm. As you probably expect, the thicker the casing is, the heavier the watch will be, which means you’re going to want to avoid a thicker watch if you have smaller wrists. You want to know that your watch is on your wrist, but it shouldn’t start to feel like a weight by the end of the day.

On the flip side of that, however, it’s difficult for a thicker wrist to sport a thinner casing without looking out of place.

Thick or Thin Bands?

Hopefully, you’re ready to do some math!

The perfect band width for your wrist actually has less to do with your wrist size and more about the diameter of the case. Regardless of whether you like a very thin or very thick band, what you’ll want is a band width that’s half the size of the case diameter. If the watch band is disproportionate to the diameter of the watch itself, the casing can either get lost against a band that’s too big or look out of place on a much thinner band.

Kind of like with the diameter of the casing, if you have a larger wrist, you’ll want a thicker band. Should you want to, you can typically replace the band and can choose between something as small as 6mm to as large as about 30mm, but keep in mind its relation to the overall diameter of the face.

While we’re on the topic of bands, don’t forget to get a band that’s sized to your wrist. A watch that flops between the edge of your hand and your upper forearm looks sloppy and one that’s too tight is just simply uncomfortable.

 width=

The Difference Between Leather and Metal

As if it weren’t difficult enough to have to chose the right size, you also need to consider the material you want your watch band to be made of. Believe it or not, the difference between leather and metal is about more than just how it looks and feels – it can greatly alter the perceived size of the watch.

If it’s a slimmer look you’re hoping to achieve, you’ll want to go for a leather band. Metal bands, however, are going to appear heavier and bulkier. Try to pair the band based on the diameter and thickness of the casing. For instance, if you have a larger diameter and thicker case, a leather band will keep it from looking too bulky(and may be harder to wear correctly for those with small wrists).

Beyond changing the perceived size of the watch, the type of band can also make your watch look either very sleek or more industrial. Thinner cases may look better with a leather band as they tend to look more sophisticated.

Looking back at sizing around the wrist, metal watch bands are easier to size should you happen to lose – or gain – any weight.

 width=

The Extra Bits

What you may not have thought of when it came to watch buying is everything beyond the band, lugs, and casing. That’s right, components like the crown, the pushers, the numbers, and the hands of the watch can actually give the illusion of a larger or smaller watch.

If you don’t have a need for larger numbers as some with poor eyesight may, you’re better off with smaller numbers, thinner hands, and fewer components. If you feel your watch is looking a little small for your wrist, you probably want to go in the opposite direction and buy one with thicker numbers and more options to it.

Of course, with the growing popularity of wearable technology, the sizing of components may wind up being a moot concern for many watch wearers as we switch to touchscreen and customizable faces.

How to Fix Your Loud PS4 and Protect it From Dust https://improb.com/how-to-fix-your-loud-ps4/ Sun, 17 Jun 2018 15:20:49 +0000 https://improb.com/?p=20423 Steps to fix.

The post How to Fix Your Loud PS4 and Protect it From Dust appeared first on Improb.

]]>
Is your PS4 starting to sound like a 747 about to take off? Does your PS4 heat up your entire room like a portable heater? Are you wondering why your PS4 is so loud and how to fix it?

Even if you’ve been keeping your PlayStation 4 in a well ventilated spot, chances are dust has still made its way into your console.

When you bought your PS4 it was whisper quiet. As time went by your PS4 became louder and louder. Now it’s at the point where as soon as you start a game the fans immediately kick in and your PS4 now sounds like a blow dryer.

This scenario may sound familiar to you long time PS4 owners and you’ve probably done what everyone else has done. You take a can of compressed air and blow out the dust.

Here’s the problem though.

Unless you take apart your PS4 and clean the inside, your PS4 is literally just collecting dust.

So how exactly can you fix your loud PS4? Well, it’s actually really simple and we’ll show you how step by step. And we’ll also show you how you can better protect your PS4 from dust.

So if you’re tired of putting on PS4 headsets to drown out the noise your PlayStation 4 makes, read on.

How do I fix my loud PS4?

The importance of cleaning and performing preventative maintenance on a PS4 is something most don’t really think about. But one of the main problems your PS4 can run into is dust buildup that can cause unwanted issues in the long term.

Here’s a brief step by step solution to fixing your loud PS4.

Step 1

At the backside of the PS4, start with removing the bottom seals that cover the screws (See Step 2) you’ll need to access in order to take apart the PS4. Keep in mind this will void your warranty so if you continue you will agree that the warranty will no longer be valid once you take the seals off.

Step 2

After you have removed the seals, unscrew the 3 lower screws (counterclockwise) on the bottom backside of the PS4, a T8 or T9 screwdriver will be more than enough to help you with this type of task.

Step 3

The bottom half of the PS4 will pop right off by gently pulling it away from the rest of the console. Do this nice and gently so no damage is being done to the PS4.

Step 4

Once you remove the lower half of the PS4 cover you will see that dust has collected on the vent areas of the cover you removed so don’t forget to clean it out.

Step 5

The dust typically accumulates on the fan and this is where you want to focus your efforts. Analyze the fan and see if there is any dust accumulation. Usually if your PS4 produces loud noises, then your console was due for a cleaning so it’s a very good idea to focus on getting the issue solved immediately.

Step 6

Use an air compressor or canned air to blow away the dust. Make sure you don’t turn the canned air sideways. In doing so the liquid will exit the can and you might end up damaging your PS4. Instead, keep the canned air upright while spraying and make sure that you remove all the accumulated dust in the PS4 cover, from the fan, and anywhere else you see dust in your PS4.

Warning: Do not blow the air inside the PS4 Disk Drive! If you’re not sure what we’re talking about just know that the disk drive is where you insert your game disk, Blu-rays, DVDs, etc. at the front of the PS4. Avoid this area.

Step 7

Regardless of what cleaning option you use, make sure that you leave your PS4 turned off at least for 15-30 minutes or more. There’s always the chance that liquid from the air compressor could have entered your PS4 and the last thing you want is for your PS4 to be damaged beyond repair. So play it safe and just wait to turn it on.

Step 8

After you get the majority of the dust out (it doesn’t have to be spotless, just 80-90% of it all), all you have to do is to place the plastic cover back and place the screws in place as well, then the process will be complete.

Note: Again, remember to never blow air inside the disk drive, instead keep the process focused only on the fan. If you use compressed air on the disk drive it will malfunction and most of the time you will just destroy it this way.

Repeat this at least once every 2-3 months, as it will help your PS4 run the best possible way, without any issues or overheating.

How to prevent dust from getting into your PS4

If your PS4 is prone to collecting dust, then there are a couple accessories you can invest in to help prevent dust collection.

PlayStation 4 Dust Cover

The first accessory that can help stop dust from getting into your PS4 is the PlayStation 4 Dust Cover by Foamy Lizard. This is a great way to protect your PlayStation 4 from a multitude of things including:

  • Dust
  • Liquid spillage (Soda, water, beer)
  • UV
  • Scratches
  • Cats sitting on your PS4 (It happens!)

Foamy Lizard’s PS4 dust cover was specifically designed to fit the dimensions of the PlayStation 4 while in the horizontal position. And not to worry as they do sell a vertical (Standing up) PS4 dust cover model as well.

The dust cover is designed to keep your PS4 clean and in a pristine condition. So you no longer have to worry about dusting off your PS4 or receiving accidental scratches that seem to appear out of nowhere.

It’s quite simple to use.

  1. Take the cover off during gaming sessions.
  2. Put the cover on when not in use.

There is even a back cutaway so you don’t have to remove your console cables when covering it.

Purchase

Another solution to help prevent your PS4 from gathering dust in the wrong places and becoming noisy is to invest in a dust prevention kit. The Aweek Dust Proof Dust Prevention Cover Case Mesh Jack Stopper Pack Kits will help lengthen the life of your PS4 and stop it from sucking in dust particles.

There’s not much to this as you just basically pop the pieces in certain places on your PS4. These pieces are designed to collect the dust particles that would normally be sucked into your PlayStation 4 console.

The post Primer: How To Tell If A Girl Likes You with 15+ Proven Signs appeared first on Improb.

]]>

In the dating scene, there is a lot of pressure put on the guys. In almost every case, the guy is expected to initiate the conversation, woo the girl, and eventually ask her on a date, and very, very rarely does it ever happen the other way around. This can be nerve wrecking, and rejection doesn’t always feel the best. In fact, fear of rejection is most commonly the exact thing that holds guys back from asking the girl they are crushing on out on a date. Would you be more likely to ask out the girl of your dreams if you thought for sure she would say yes? Of course you would! Once you knock that fear of rejection, the entire process is that much easier. In fact, once you eliminate the fear (or possibility) of rejection, the entire process comes incredibly natural to most men. After all, this is a girl that you have a crush on, so how hard can it be to find something to talk to her about?

One of the best ways to avoid the possibility of rejection is to make sure that the girl you’re asking on a date likes you, too. Of course, this can be tricky, since girls aren’t always upfront with their feelings. Like we said, they expect the guy to be the one to initiate conversation, so the chances of them just coming right out and saying they are interested in you are pretty slim. Every once in a blue moon you may have a girl who flirts with you first, and even more rarely a girl may invite you to attend an event with her, but she still won’t usually call it a date. In the end, you could still be left wondering if she really likes you, or if she is just being friendly. Manners and a friendly demeanor are awful attractive, but they can sometimes make it really hard to differentiate between a girl who wants to be your friend, and a girl who possibly wants something much more.

No worries, though, because there are a few sure fire ways to tell that a girl likes you. Of course, every girl is different, but these few common behaviors seen in most girls generally indicate that they have an interest in you past just being friends. Maybe not if she only displays one behavior from the list, but if the girl you are crushing on shows multiple of these behaviors when you’re around, then there’s a pretty good chance that she likes you, too. Once you’ve determined that your crush is crushing on you, then you should definitely take that next step and ask her out, because chances are she will say yes!

Some of these things are based on science. They are completely subconscious, and even she may not be aware that she is giving herself away. Others are entirely conscious behaviors. Sometimes she may even be directly attempting to get you to notice her, or to take your relationship one step further. It all can be really confusing, we know, so we’ve made you a list of these behaviors to help you figure out.

She Smiles At You

Of course, girls can smile at you and not mean anything by it, but if you notice that your crush is smiling at you everytime she sees you, that is definitely a good sign. A girl will smile when they feel comfortable or want to seem approachable. She knows that smiling at you is a sure, but subtle way to get your attention. Maybe a passing smile means nothing at all, but if nine times out of ten she is smiling your way, then she is probably giving you the green light to approach her and strike up a conversation. After all, if she weren’t interested, chances are she wouldn’t even be looking you’re way that often, much less smiling at you all the time.

She Looks For You Immediately Upon Entering A Room

This only works if you share a class, job, or regular event with her, but you should be able to notice if she looks for you when she knows you will be around. If she walks into a room and she knows you’re going to be there, pay close attention. If she likes you, she is probably going to look for you immediately upon entering a room she expects you to be in. Her eyes will flutter around the room until she sees you. She could act one of two ways once she catches your stare. She could smile and act entirely approachable or happy to see you, or she could lookaway and nonchalantly pretend as if she weren’t looking for you to begin with. If she likes you, though, you can bet that she acts a little different when you are around than when you aren’t. This may only be simple changes, like she could be more conscious of her appearance, checking her hair or makeup frequently. Or she could get incredibly nervous when you’re around. Perhaps she speaks out less in class. Either way, if her eyes search for you every time she walks in the room, it’s because she is interested in you and wants to know when you’re around.

Her Body Language Is Approachable

This one is important. In order to be able to read a girl and her feelings for you, you need to learn how to read body language. Women are notorious for wearing their thoughts and feelings on their sleeve, and if a girl doesn’t want you around, she will often do what she can to seem unapproachable. Sometimes this means staying on her cell phone, turning away from you, avoiding eye contact, or other body language signs that seem to shoo you away. However, if a girl likes you, she will do the exact opposite. For instance, if she turns towards you, sits with her arms open, points her body in your direction, tilts her chin upwards, brushes her hair out of her face, or seems relaxed when you come around, those are usually signs that she is comfortable with you approaching her. Of course, this may not be a sure fire sign that she likes you, but it at least indicates that she is interested in a conversation with you, which can definitely get the ball rolling and give you the opportunity to look for other signs that she may be interested in you, too.

She’s Always Preening When You’re Around

Preening is the act of adjusting oneself to appear more attractive. For a girl, this usually means straightening her posture to make her chest more profound, fixing her hair to frame her face, or otherwise positioning her body to get your attention. This is a natural thing across almost every species, and it’s no different in humans. The acts may be intentional or subconscious, meaning she may straighten her posture when you’re around without even noticing. Other actions that fall into this category could be standing up when you’re in the room, turning to the side to show off different assets, or lifting her chin to look confident. Either way, if she’s preening when you come around, it’s because she wants to get your attention.

She Laughs When You Talk To Her

If she laughs when you talk, especially at your cheesy jokes, then she likes you, no doubt. Blame a lot of it on science, but girls are much more likely to laugh at everything you say when they feel relaxed, comfortable, or infatuated by a guy. Of course, we don’t mean she has to laugh at every single conversation the two of you have. There should always be room for more serious, straightforward conversations, too. But she will laugh often, or make jokes pertaining to what you were talking about to find reasons for the two of you to laugh together. You can always try cracking a couple of cheesy jokes. If she is into you, she will laugh at them, no matter how bad they are.

She Glances At You Often

If you notice that she looks your way, even for short periods of time, it’s usually because she is interested. She could be trying to learn more about you, or she could be curious if you ever look in her direction. Typically, if she likes you, she will naturally want to know if you like her too, so she will be looking your way often. These glances are usually pretty short stares, and she may smile or appear to be looking right past you if you catch her. Either way, if she is looking your way more often than not, it’s because she is interested in what you’re doing, and probably interested in how you feel, too.

She Looks Away When You Make Eye Contact

Now, she may look at you often, but when you look back at her she will most likely dart her eyes away from you. This is a simple case of nervousness. She feels shy (because she likes you) and she doesn’t want you to know she was looking at you. If she avoids prolonged eye contact, especially if she was looking at you first, then that is a pretty good sign that she is interested in you. Try making eye contact with her and see how she reacts. Once you catch her eyes, if she doesn’t look away, she will probably smile in your direction.

She Fidgets A Lot

Girls fidget anyways, that is true, but fidgeting could indicate that she is nervous around you, which in turn could indicate that she likes you. Look for little things that she might do when you’re around, especially when you talk to her. She might play with her hair while she talks to you. Or she could fidget with her phone or her keys or her jewelry. Either way, nervous fidgeting is usually a sign of attraction, and it might indicate that she’s waiting for you to make your move.

She Touches You Often

Often, if she likes you, she will find reasons to touch you. This could be simple, like brushing against you as she passes by or reaching out to touch you arm to comment on a scar or tattoo. Or it could be more openly affectionate, like a hug when she first sees you or when she leave. Either way, girls are pretty conscious or their body and the things they touch, so if she touches you frequently, you can assume that it’s probably intentional. If she is deliberately touching you, it means she likes you.

She Adds You On Social Media

Social media is a great way to get to know more about someone, especially if you are too nervous or shy to talk to them in real life. If she adds you online, there is definitely some sort of interest there. She may be trying to look at your relationship status, your interests, or maybe she just wants to see your status updates to learn more about you. Sometimes, a girl may add you on social media because she wants to open up every opportunity for you to talk to her. If she likes your photos, comments on your statuses, or interacts with you otherwise on the internet, she may just be inviting you to interact with her in real life.

She Blushes When You Are Around

Here is another one you can thank science for. When a girl likes you, she is likely to blush around you pretty often. Blushing is a reaction that is subconsciously controlled by your nervous system, and when you feel extreme emotions, like anger, joy, or physical attraction, that nervous system tends to overload and cause the muscles in your face to fill with blood. Therefore, if a woman blushes around you often, she is likely physically attracted to you. Since this is an automatica reaction, and not something she can control, its one of the more doubt free ways to determine that she likes you.

She Seems Jealous When You Talk To Other Girls

Girls are notoriously jealous, and jealousy is a pretty significant sign of attraction. If she seems jealous when you talk to other girls, it’s probably because she likes you quite a bit. She may not outright tell yo she is jealous, but she may ask alot of questions about that girl, like how you know her or how long you’ve known her. She might make jokes about this girl being your crush or girlfriend, which is just an attempt to get you to tell her if you like the girl or not. Of course, there is a point where jealousy may be a red flag, especially if she acts controlling. But a little playful jealousy over you talking to other girls is just her showing you how she truly feels, that is, that she wants you all to herself.

She Talks To Her Friends About You

Of course, if you don’t know her friends, or if her friends are really great at keeping secrets, this tip won’t help you out much. But let’s face it, girls gossip, and if she has said anything about you to her friends, you have probably heard it through the grapevine. If you overhear that she was whispering to her friends about you, then it’s pretty obvious that she is interested. Her friends are less likely to tell you about good things she says than the bad, so if they are trying to keep it a secret then it’s likely that she was totally crushing on you to her friends. Regardless of what was said, though, the fact that she even brings you up to her friends means you are relevant to her in some way, and it may just be because she likes you quite a bit.

She Hints That She Is Single

This is a pretty big deal, actually, and one of the easiest ways to tell that a girl is into you. If she leads on or hints that she is single, it’s because she wants you to ask her out. She has no other reason to divulge to you her relationship status, besides to let you know that she is available and looking to date. She might not come right out and say “Hey, I’m single and want to date you,” but rather suggest the idea. She could mention things about her previous relationship or her exes to imply that she isn’t dating someone now. Either way, if she is hinting to you that she is available, then she probably wants you to ask her out.

She Leaves Her Friends To Talk To You

Girls travel in groups, love to gossip, and usually stick pretty closely to their clique of friends. If she exits a conversation with her friends to speak to you, even just to catch up and say hi, she might just be interested in being more than friends with you. This means that she notices you, or that she finds you interesting enough to leave her friends for the chance at a conversation with you. If she walks away from her friends to talk to you instead, you better believe she likes you, and you better believe she’s going to tell her friends all about it later, too.

She Texts You Back Quickly

Rest assured, she almost always has her phone. If you text her and she rarely replies, then it might be time to let it go, but if she replies instantly and keeps the conversation going, she definitely likes you. You can also judge the content of her text messages. If she is into you, she won’t just let a conversation die out. Instead, she may ask questions about you or tell you about herself. If she likes you, you definitely won’t be getting a lot of “K”s and “Yeah”s to your inbox. If she is sending you texts out of the blue or starting conversations with you, she’s probably ready for you to ask her on a date. Of course, she probably has a life, so don’t assume that just because she doesn’t always reply that she doesn’t like you. Just try again later and see how it goes.

She Puts Her Phone Away When You’re Around

Like we said, girls always have their phone. So if she doesn’t use it much when you’re around, there is probably a reason why. If you notice that she puts her phone away when you talk to her, that she puts off phone calls or text messages until you leave, or she tries to make calls and texts quick, it’s probably because she is more interested in what you have to say than what’s going on in her phone. Sometimes, calls or texts might be urgent and unavoidable, but as long as she isn’t ignoring you to constantly text her friends, then there’s a good sign she is listening to what you have to say.

She Does Any Of These Things More Than Once

This is probably the most important thing on the list. It is incredibly juvenile to assume that because a girl does one of these things once or twice that she is automatically in love with you. In fact, some of these things, like smiling at you, can really just mean that she is being polite and well mannered. What you should look for is whether the behaviors repeat, or whether she exhibits several behaviors from this list frequently. Look for more than one clue before jumping to conclusions that a girl likes you. But if she is smiling in your direction, blushing when you talk to her, and always laughing at your jokes, there’s a good chance she is into you. Of course, the only way to really know is to ask, so work up the courage to ask that girl on a date, and you just might be surprised at how well it goes.

Wi-fi is a wonderful thing. There was a time when the only way to surf the web was by firing up your dial-up connection on a desktop computer. Today, we can enjoy the benefits of online on our game consoles, smartphones, and many other devices without having to plug them into a router.

Of course, a pleasant experience can quickly turn frustrating as soon as your Wi-Fi signal starts failing on you. Whether it’s a connection that keeps dropping or painfully slow speeds, you’ve probably suffered Wi-Fi issues before. If you’re tired of your Wi-Fi acting up during an important Skype call, heated online video game match, or in the middle of a Netflix binge session, keep on reading.

The 3 Most Common Wi-Fi Issues

When people talk about having Wi-Fi troubles they’re usually experiencing one of the following three. As annoying as they are, there’s usually a reason why it’s happening to you. Knowing why is the first step to solving your Wi-Fi woes.

Bad Wi-Fi Range

Unless you live in a small studio or do most of your internet use in one room, it doesn’t matter how impressive your speed is if your Wi-Fi gets wonky a few feet away from your router. Using your tablet or laptop is fine when used in the same area, but take a trip to the kitchen or living room and your connection suffers.

This is a tough issue to diagnose since there can be a lot of things causing your range to degrade where it shouldn’t. From owning an outdated router to having metal objects nearby, it may take some trial and error to pinpoint the problem. If this is the issue you’re having, keep reading to check out our list of solutions to the most common Wi-Fi troubles.

Slow Wi-Fi Speed

There are few things more frustrating than knowing you’re not enjoying something you’re paying for. Even though you’re giving that internet service provider big bucks each month, your online games always end up laggy or your streamed movies take forever to load. Although many things can cause this issue, usually it’s one of two reasons.

The first one could be that you simply don’t have enough bandwidth for all your devices. Even though 50/50 Mbps is great, it’s not enough if you have several devices all feeding off your Wi-Fi at the same time. It’s easy to forget how many game consoles, laptops, tablets, and smart phone we might have in our place that are all fighting for the same signal.

The other reason your Wi-Fi speeds may be slower than they should is due to interference. There are a lot of things that can mess with your router’s Wi-Fi Signal, forcing you to get closer to it to enjoy better speeds. Keep reading this guide to discover the many types of materials and objects you should keep your router away from.

Dropped Wi-Fi

Poor speeds and range aren’t great, but at least you can still use your internet. It’s when you keep getting kicked out of a match or internet pages refuse to load when people start pulling their hair out. Just like the other issues, there can be a number of things causing this one.

The easiest thing to test for is devices that release electromagnetic waves. Move your router away from things like microwave ovens and cordless phones to see if your sudden Wi-Fi drops go away. While it may seem to easy to be true, sometimes all it takes is a router reboot to allow your network to refresh. Remember that your router is probably on 24/7 and constantly in use— giving it a break might make all the difference.

11 Simple Ways To Fix Your Wi-Fi Troubles

Wi-Fi issues can be tricky businesses. Just like when your ‘check engine’ light turns on in your car, it’s rarely obvious what could be hindering your signal. Try the following tips to see if one of them solves your your Wi-Fi problems:

1. Move your wireless router away from signal-disrupting objects

There are a lot of things in your home that may be affecting your Wi-Fi range and speed or causing drops. The biggest perpetrator is metal, a powerful conductor of electricity and magnetism. Since metal absorbs radio waves, which are electromagnetic energy, it may be the reason your Wi-Fi signal isn’t great. The fact that most Wi-Fi routers handle data via copper wire antennas only adds to the issue.

We suggest keeping a good distance between your router and the following:

  • Remotes for TVs and other wireless devices
  • Security alarms,
  • Baby monitors,
  • Cordless phones
  • Microwaves
  • Other Wi-Fi routers

Since metal doesn’t play nice with the average Wi-Fi router, the kitchen is one of the last places you want to keep yours. Other materials known to sabotage Wi-Fi signals include solid concrete, bricks, and water. If you live in a small area and it’s difficult to keep your router away from these kinds of materials, consider a dual band router with 5.0 GHz. Compared to 2.4 GHz, a 5.0 GHz frequency is far more resistant to interference.

2. Relocate your Wi-Fi router to a central location

One of the worst things you can do with your Wi-Fi router is stick it in a corner where no one can see it. This is even more problematic if doing so means it’s now behind a cabinet or other object. Unless you spend all your time in that that area of your place, we recommend placing your Wi-Fi router somewhere in the middle of your home.

Doing so will give you a better signal strength no matter where you are in the house. Wi-Fi routers are omnidirectional, which means the Wi-Fi signal is being sent to every direction at the same strength. Placing it in a central location will allow your signal to bounce throughout your place, reaching more areas. On the other hand, keeping it in a corner means you’re sending part of your signal toward your home and the other into outer space.

3. Keep your router high

Although Wi-Fi signals are sent out in every direction, they have a much easier time traveling downward and sideways as opposed to upward. This is due to other appliances also sending out signals upward For this reason it’s a bad idea placing your router somewhere near the ground such as a low entertainment cabinet or table.

To increase your Wi-Fi signal strength and range, place your router on a high bookshelf or desk. If necessary, add extra height with books or game/movie cases. If you have a second floor, set up your router there so your signal can be better distributed to everywhere else in the home.

4. Adjust your antenna’s position

If relocating your Wi-Fi router to one of the places we’ve recommended didn’t do the trick, you might also need to reposition the antenna/s. You’d be surprised by the impact tweaking your antenna’s direction can have on your signal’s range and strength.

People who live in two-story homes or have a basement will want to improve their Wi-Fi signal’s vertical reach by positioning the antenna sideways. Otherwise, stick the antenna/s directly up to maximize vertical coverage. If you own a router with two or more antennas, give yourself the best coverage possible by pointing half of them up and the other half parallel to the ground.

Doing will give also your various wireless devices better signal strength since different devices vary when it comes to internal antenna placement. For instance, most laptops have horizontal internal antennas while desktops are outfitted with vertical antennas. Mobile devices are mostly unaffected since they’re designed to receive signal no matter what position they’re held.

5. Change your wireless channel

Wireless routers come with several channels for you to select in order to avoid interference with other routers and wireless devices. But since most people leave theirs on the default channel, their signal is probably being disrupted by everyone around them who did the same— especially if they live in the city or apartments.

The trick is to find out which channel is being used the least by other Wi-Fi networks. To do so on a PC, type in “netsh wlan show all” in a command prompt to see other wireless networks and the channel they use. If you’re having trouble doing this, switch around between channels 1, 6 and 11. They’re known to work best with most 802.11n and 802.11g routers.

We also recommend using one of the many excellent programs out there that can help you discover the best channel. Programs like Heatmapper, Netspot, and Wi-Fi Analyzer can do just that while also offering valuable information, such as showing you what areas of your home have the best and worst signal strength.

6. Assign devices to one of two frequencies (dual-band)

There are many benefits of owning a dual-band router. Having both a 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz.frequency means better range and signal strength because there’s more bandwidth for all your devices to share. But if you feel that your dual-band router isn’t working as well as you had hoped, it might be time to assign your devices to a specific frequency.

All it takes is a visit into your network’s administrator interface and see if your router supports this feature. If so, we recommend assigning big devices like gaming consoles and computers to the 5 GHz while keeping things like smartphones and tablets on the 2.4 GHz frequency. This way, using your phone or iPad will never interfere with any online tasks you’re doing on your laptop or Xbox One/PS4.

7. Upgrade your router antenna

Some Wi-Fi routers come with antennas that can be swapped out for another. Getting rid of an outdated antenna in favor of a new one can work wonders when it comes to your Wi-Fi signal range. It’s also important to find out what type of new antenna would work best for your home.

For example, a high-gain antenna is perfect for an apartment or small place since they allow you to focus your signal toward your living space as opposed to outside. Since your signal is no longer being sent out all over the place, it could also reduce the chance of people mooching your internet connection if you live in a crowded area.

8. Make sure no one is stealing your Wi-Fi

There’s nothing worse than having slower Wi-Fi speeds simply because an unwanted guest decided to share your internet connection. While they download huge file sizes and download illegal content, you’re stuck dealing with slow speeds. This is why the first thing you should do after obtaining a router is changing the default password into something else.

It’s always recommended that your password include an elaborate combination of letters, numbers, and symbols so it can’t be guessed. You should also avoid obvious things like your street name, pet names, phone numbers, etc. There’s a breakdown of the three main types of internet security to consider:

  • WEP: Wired equivalent privacy is the most basic form of protection and not recommended if you live in a crowded area, but still better than nothing.
  • WPA: Wi-Fi protected access was made to address all the weaknesses of WEP. It offers stronger encryption via two technologies: TKIP and AES.
  • WPA2: Wi-Fi protected Access 2 is currently the best form of wireless protection today and highly recommended if you to keep your network all to yourself.

9. Reboot your router

Sometimes we get so caught up with a problem that we forget about the simplest of solutions. Believe it or not, all your router might need to restore it to its former glory is a quick break, especially if yours is on 24/7.

Unplugging your router (also called power cycling) gives it a chance to resynchronize with your ISP. Before you do, turn off all your devices that use your Wi-Fi connection. Unplug the router or modem for at least a minute and voila, hopefully your wireless range and speed is better than before. Do this a minimum once a month to allow your DNS cache to remove memory leaks, outdated pages, and corrupted packets slowing down your bandwidth.

10. Upgrade your router’s firmware

One of the benefits game developers have today is the ability to address technical issues even after the game has been released. This is done by preparing patches that players can download at home to fix known problems. Today, a lot of routers also receive support in the form of firmware upgrades to take care of any problems that appeared after the router went on store shelves.

To find out if your router has a new firmware version available, visit the manufacturer’s website and check their support/downloads section. There should be instructions there that allow you to download the new firmware with no problem.

11. Use an older router as a repeater

If you have a fairly new router but are still suffering from drops or bad range, consider transforming an old router into an extender. Doing so allows the older router to rebroadcast the signal from the new router, thus eliminating dead zones and providing a better signal. Note that not every router supports this ability.

To see if yours does, check the router’s network page. If not, we strongly recommend investing in one of the Wi-Fi extenders we’ve recommended in our “Wi-Fi Extenders” section below. A Wi-Fi repeater is one of the best ways to enhance your router’s signal strength and range.

Why You Should Get A Wi-Fi Extender

If you’ve tried all our easy fixes above and still aren’t seeing a boost in Wi-Fi signal, perhaps your router needs a helping hand. After all, even the best routers can only broadcast a reliable signal so far. When you want to extend your Wi-Fi range so your entire home gets superb signal, a Wi-Fi extender (range extenders and repeaters) might just be what you need to fix your Wi-Fi troubles.

Wi-Fi extenders are devices that look like a wireless router but don’t actually produce a new signal. Instead, they pick up nearby a wireless signal and rebroadcast it in order to increase Wi-Fi reception at farther distances. Since your network router reads the Wi-Fi extenders as if it were another laptop or smartphone device, there’s no need for adjusting settings or anything complicated. You also don’t need a cable of any kind to connect the extender to your router— all you’ll need is a free electrical outlet to power it.

Placement and type

There are sweet spots for getting the most out of your Wi-Fi extender. Since they essentially create a clone of your signal, it’s not a good idea to keep extenders too close to your router. Otherwise, the signals overlap and thus your range remains the same as when there is no extender at all.

At the same time, your extender will be useless if it’s so far from your main router that it produces a very weak signal— or no signal at all. Getting a Wi-Fi extender with a signal meter eliminates the need for trial and error by giving you a better idea of where the extender should go for superior coverage.

You should also follow the same router tips we’ve covered to make sure your Wi-Fi extender actually improves the Wi-Fi signal strength and range in your area. This includes keeping it near the center of your home but toward the direction you want better coverage. Also make sure it’s in a high enough location and away from metal and electromagnetic appliances. If you have a thick wall preventing your router’s signal from travelling to the next room, placing your Wi-Fi extender near that wall can help extend your Wi-Fi signal toward that direction.

When looking for a Wi-Fi extender to buy, you should pick one up that has the same type and speed as your router. If your router is either 802.11n or 802.11ac and supports speeds of 150Mbps or 300Mbps, an extender with the same will work better. Extenders that support 802.11n are very common, while the newer 802.11ac requires extenders that cost a bit more.

Note: Buying an “ac” extender when your router only has “n” is a waste of cash.

It’s also recommended that you stick to the same manufacturer as your router. They don’t have to be since most extenders on the market are universal. However, extenders and routers designed by the same company tend to work better together.

If connecting the extender to your network with only two button presses sounds like something you’d like, we recommend one with WPS support. Although WPS is more prone to security problems, it’s the most convenient way to get your extender and main router working together.

Other Wi-Fi Extender tips

Keep in mind that while one repeater is great for extending Wi-Fi range in your space, that may not be enough. Large offices and homes with lots of floors and outside areas, including guest houses, may need more than one extender to get your router’s signal where you need it. If this is the case, make sure to place each extender out on the far edges of your main router’s signal radius so dead spots outside are covered.

Also note that devices connected to the extender’s signal won’t get the same speeds as the signal from your main network router. Signal strength is lost as the extender rebroadcasts your Wi-Fi signal and then has to send information back toward your main router. Because of this, we recommend you keep your devices that need the best connection speeds close to your network router.

Since a dual-band router broadcasts signals at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz, we suggest pairing them up with dual-band extenders. If you only use a regular 2.4GHz extender, it will only increase Wi-Fi signal strength for that frequency. Your devices and gadgets that support the superior 5GHz signal from your router won’t be able to take advantage of it if using the extender’s signal. A dual-band extender can increase Wi-Fi reception for all devices, no matter which of the two frequencies they support.

Here’s a neat trick: Something you can do with a Wi-Fi extender is create a separate hotspot. This alternate network can be assigned with its own name and password that you can give to guests or workers. This allows them to use your internet while you keep your own network private and traffic free. Some extenders also have ethernet ports that let you plug older devices that don’t support Wi-Fi, saving you the trouble of running cables from your main router to things like older desktops and Xbox consoles without the Wireless Network Adapter.

Buying A New Wi-Fi Router

Maybe you’ve tried some of the tips we provided above but your wireless internet is still subpar. You even went out and purchased one of the Wi-Fi extenders we recommended but you still aren’t seeing the signal strength and range you want. If this is the case then perhaps it’s time to upgrade that router of yours entirely.

When It’s Time For An Upgrade

You’re probably due for a new router if it’s more than five years old. Remember that routers are mechanical and usually on 24/7, which means that over time they lose performance due to heat and constant use. If your router only supports 802.11g or even 802.11n you’re missing out on the speed and range a superior 802.11ac model offers, especially today when we use so many online devices.

Picking up a dual-band router can also make a significant difference if you’re still rocking an old one that only supports one frequency. Dual-band means you have a stronger signal and more bandwidth for all your your consoles, computers, smartphones, and more to share.

If you’re convinced that you need a shiny new router, check out our list of the best ones to pick up this year:

How to quickly boost your Console Wi-Fi signal: 10 easy ways!

So you’re looking to find ways on how to boost your Playstation, Xbox or any console Wi-Fi signal huh? Well, you’ve come to the right place. After buying your system it is definitely disappointing to know that the Wi-Fi connection speed is not allowing you to enjoy your new console to its full potential.

We’ve put together a list of the 10 best ways to boost your Wi-Fi signal for gaming consoles. Some ways are simple fixes and some require some tech know-how or purchasing a product.

Either way, if you’re looking to boost your gaming console Wi-Fi signal whether it be for downloading or streaming, then check out our list and hopefully it will help you to reach better connection speeds.

1. Buy a better Wi-Fi router

As much as people hate to admit it, sometimes the wireless router you own is the number one culprit when you want to get a better Wi-Fi signal for your PS4. The difference between an okay router and a great router can be huge.

Luckily, the list above will help you out

And in case you’re wondering, our top pick for the best gaming router is the Linsys AC5400.

2. Check your cord connections

You’d be surprised at how many people don’t check their connections to their routers and console.

If speeds slow down then first make sure your plugs are connected securely, since consoles like the PS4 is plug-and-play most people don’t realize that the poorly connected plugs are what often gives a low performance.

3. Get rid of Wi-Fi obstacles

If your connections are plugged in properly and you still have a speed problem, then perhaps you could ensure that there are no obstacles coming in the path between the game console and your Wi-Fi source.

Sometimes just placing the console closer to the source also improves the speed performance. The walls of the rooms that come between the router and the console as well as the distance created by the floors of the house obstruct the signal from travelling smoothly.

In unobstructed spaces the Wi-Fi signal can travel at a much faster speed.

4. Get a better antenna

Besides moving the router, another way to boost your Wi-Fi signal is to place a better antenna on your wireless router.

Tip: If you own a good Wi-Fi router, before buying a new router consider buying a better Wi-Fi Antenna to boost your wireless signal.

If the antenna is pointed in the direction of your console you could find that your PS4 has sped up and is downloading a bit better.

5. Limit the amount of streaming in your home

Sometimes it is possible that the service provider is not prioritizing streaming on the PS4 console. Instead the service provider could be prioritizing other kinds of traffic like streaming their own videos.

So if there is a lot of streaming going on in your home the limit it while playing or downloading on your PS4

6. Move the console closer to the Wi-Fi router or vice versa

If your console is located far away from the router and there are obstacles in the way of the signal, then moving closer to the wireless router will help boost your Wi-Fi signal than if you are further away from the signal.

This is a very overlooked solution and just by moving the router to a more appropriate location you could get the speeds you are looking for.

7. Tether your smartphone to your PS4

Did you know you could tether a connection from your smartphone to your PS4? If you have a strong internet signal on your phone, you should consider doing this option to download games, patches, DLC, and more.

VideoHow to tether your Android phone to PS4

8. Switch to a less busy channel

A number of game console owners often check speeds of their connection by running speed tests on dedicated sites. These sites allow you to check speeds at various times of the day.

If your service provider has oversubscribed, then at certain times of the day your speeds could slow down when everyone is connected.

Maybe you could in that case switch to a less busy channel.

An IP address is given at the back of the router then click through to Wi-Fi settings to see what network services have been recommended for your router.

Then using your username and password change to a different service channel.

9. Get a Wi-Fi extender

Wi-Fi extenders, which is also called a repeater, can help to speed up your PS4 Wi-Fi signal.

The repeater picks up the signal from the router and retransmits it. This way you can expand the signal to more rooms and speed up your Wi-Fi signal significantly.

10. Buy a power-line network adapter

You could also use devices like a power-line network adapter. This is a two piece device. One part goes into the router and the other is placed in a plug in the room you want the higher speeds in.

The Wi-Fi is enhanced through the power-line. That will give your console its own dedicated line, which will be fast as only that device could run on it.

Get a better Wi-Fi router for online gaming

In the current generation of gaming, it’s not really a surprise to many that you need to have a reliable internet connection. In order to take full advantage of PC gaming, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U gaming consoles, you’re going to need a strong Wi-Fi connection.

A lot of people are not prepared to jump into the new generation of gaming because their internet connection is just plain bad. And others who own the current gaming platforms are running into connectivity issues and may not know why.

When it comes down to it, the reality may be you need to buy a new router for gaming. Plain and simple.

There may be no tricks, tips or fixes that can be done to rectify your current Wi-Fi problems. It may just come down to you needing to buy a new router. So to help you out, the list above provides the best router’s for gamers.

Buying a new wireless router for gaming can make a significant difference that you might not have been aware of but should look into. Especially if you have an older router.
