One can argue that the classic Hawaiian shirt, also known as the Aloha shirt, reached its first peak of coolness when Tom Selleck made them his uniform on the classic 80’s TV show Magnum P.I. Following their endorsement by the godfather of mustaches, they reached a nadir when retirees made them their uniform of choice when lounging around in Florida. California Cowboy brought the Aloha back with its terry cloth-lined High Water Shirt with its custom designs, slimmer fit, and hidden tech. And now, the company has released the High Water Tropic,  a hot weather version with all the features, minus the lining for comfort in warmer temps.

Features, Testing, & Review

One thing is clear when you put on this shirt: these guys know how to party. Every feature on this shirt is designed to make your drinking and socializing more efficient, from the sunglass loop on the front to the perfectly sized beer koozie/pocket just above the back hem. There’s even a hidden pocket for your phone that’s completely waterproof, so you don’t have to do that frantic twist-and-throw if your buddies decide to throw you in the pool.

While all of those features are well thought out and useful, they don’t mean anything if the shirt is too ugly to wear. Over my years of gear testing and reviews, I’ve come across countless pieces of apparel that sport handy features but look geeky as hell. Sure, I love a bunch of secure pockets, but I’m not going to go out with a shirt that makes me look like Bill Gates on safari. The dude has a lot of gifts, but style is not one of them.

During testing, it was immediately apparent that the style of the California Cowboy High Water Tropic shirt wasn’t going to be an issue. I wore the shirt during a night out, and people constantly stopped by my patio table and complimented the sweet pineapple design throughout the evening (it was a tiki bar, so natch). California Cowboy clearly knows what looks good.

It was comfortable as well — the fabric was stretchy yet substantial, and the cloth-like feel never gave me the impression that I was wearing workout clothes or a T-shirt. It was as comfortable as my favorite pair of sweats but looked and felt like my higher-end dress shirts.

And the features might seem gimmicky at first glance, but I used every part of this shirt — the sunglass holder gave me a perfect place to hold my sunnies when I went indoors, and the beer koozie and tech pockets gave me full use of my hands without having to put my drink or phone down.

Also, whipping out an open beer from behind my back and taking a swig looked like a magic trick to the inebriated.

It is abundantly clear that the people who made this shirt are folks you’d want to hang with. The High Water Tropic (MSRP $115) is packed full of “why didn’t I think of that” features that we’ve all been wishing that we’ve had on our favorite shirts ever since we were old enough to drink.

Runways, casting calls, endless shutter clicks, and flashes; the life of a model is less glamorous than it seems, but their access to the latest and greatest insider wisdom? Yes, please. But typically, runway fashion is over the top and not fit for everyday wear. Let’s talk about how to dress like a model that’s headed to a casting call, shoot, or out on the town. Keep It Basic

I spent 14 years of my life behind the camera and on the runway, which meant I attended a lot of casting calls. At the time, my go-to casting call outfit was a black pencil skirt, tight-fitting grey cap sleeve sweater, and stiletto heels. A black or grey palette, form-fitting clothing, and steep heels — that’s how you dressed like a model. Your outfit had to accentuate your body but allow you to move should you need to demonstrate your runway walk or a specific action.

Nowadays, denim jeans and a basic tank top or tee are standard casting call attire. To dress like a model, keep to neutral colors that show off your best features. Prints, beads, and designs are distracting and therefore a no-no.

A cashmere sweater will typically cost you two to three times more than a standard wool option. However, given how soft, warm, and thin they are, we are compelled to say that they are worth the expense if you can swing it.

Why are cashmere sweaters so expensive?

Two million tons of regular wool is produced each year worldwide, while only seven tons of cashmere is available in the same amount of time. To make one ladies’ sweater, you’d need about two goats worth of hair to produce a fine garment. This supply and demand situation is what runs the budget up on this incredible fabric.

How can you tell real cashmere?

A quick glance at the label will identify for you whether you’re holding genuine cashmere. Many manufacturers offer a blend of cashmere and standard wool as a way of creating an entry point for consumers while still maintaining some of the benefits of cashmere. This is, of course, a sub-optimal option if you’re looking for the good stuff, but it allows new consumers to get their hands on the unique fabric.

How do you tell if it’s good cashmere?

Good cashmere is actually pretty easy to identify, so once you get your hands on a sweater, you can run it through a few quick tests.

The first test is just feeling the fabric. If you’re even remotely familiar with standard wool, this fabric should feel very soft and supple compared to standard wool. However, be leery of over-soft cashmere. Some companies will treat their material with harsh chemicals to increase their softness. While this may feel better upfront, the garment will definitely not last as long. Avoid cashmere that feels softer than linen.

Great cashmere has incredible rebound to it, making it an amazing fabric for sweaters as you want them to retain their shape over the years. Give your cashmere fabric a little tug and see how quickly it bounces back to its original form; it should be quick. The tighter the weave of cashmere, the better it will bounce back.

All cashmere will pill over time or form small, rice-sized swirls of fabric that eventually fall off. If the fabric you’re holding pills very easily, it means that they used a lot of shorter hairs to produce the threads, and thus it is of lower quality. All cashmere is subject to pilling, but the pilling will happen much more slowly if it features long threads.

Finally, hold the cashmere up to your eye level and look across the surface with a little bit of light on it. There should be a very minimal amount of fiber or fluff hanging off the sweater, indicating that long hairs have been used for the construction. If there’s a lot of short fibers looking like they are trying to escape, you’ve probably got your hands on a lower quality cashmere.

Which country produces the best cashmere?

Deep in the far east, the vast majority of cashmere is sourced each year. The Kashmir region is a small pocket of mountainous territory that is shared by Pakistan, China, India, and Mongolia. This region is responsible for over 75% of the world’s cashmere goats and produces over 5 tons of fabric each year.

How often should you wash cashmere?

Cashmere should be dry cleaned once in the middle of the winter and once at the end. We would not recommend trying to wash cashmere at home because doing so incorrectly could cause the garment to be unwearable. In between your dry cleaning sessions, rolling the garment up in a plastic bag and placing it in the freezer will kill any bacteria and reduce the odor the sweater may be carrying.

Once you’ve pulled the sweater out of the freezer, apply a cashmere treatment to it. This spray treatment can be bought at any grocery store and helps to keep the fibers from drying out, and will ensure your garment is wearable for years to come.

Is cashmere production cruel?

It can be. However, there are many companies that deal with cashmere that have a dedication to treating animals with respect. One of the biggest concerns in cashmere production is removing the hair from the goat when they need it most, the winter. Respectable companies shorn their goats in the summer months to produce material for winter and allow the animals to retain their fur when the temperature starts to drop. One of the easiest ways to reduce the harm is through buying recycled cashmere from brands like Patagonia, ADAY, and Stella McCartney.

• Textile – Textiles have the greatest versatility and capacity for options in protection, visibility, and ventilation. The pants are often ballistic nylon, a durable, thick synthetic fabric, or Cordura Nylon. Breathable and with water-resistant properties, textiles make a great riding or over pants. Textiles can typically only endure one fall, whereas leather might withstand a few dates with asphalt. It’s cheaper, but you’ll end up replacing your textile pants more often than leather.
• Leather – Leather has the highest abrasion resistance and provides excellent protection against road rash, and, consequently, is the heaviest material. Over time it can become uncomfortable or unbreathable with the low temperature regulating properties. Leather pants are typically more expensive than textile pants but will more than a few rounds with the pavement and can potentially be repaired. Textile pants will typically take one or two tussles before needing to be replaced.
• Demin – Denim is primarily in commuting motorcycle pants. It is an effortless look that travels nicely from bike to bar. Denim offers low resistance to abrasions and tears compared to textiles and leather.
• Kevlar – Kevlar is a lightweight but strong synthetic aramid fiber with high abrasion resistance and high resistance for such a lightweight material. Because of the weight, it typically isn’t utilized independently; you’ll see a blend of kevlar and denim or Kevlar reinforced high impact areas.

Fit – Your motorcycle pants’ fit should have a balanced snug fit, so they do not shift out of place during a crash while being flexible to ride comfortably. Features like flex or stretch panels around the knee and seat regions to offer flexibility without jeopardizing shape.

To ensure a close fit, you’ll need to know your true waist size and inseam length. If you’re in the market for over pants, double-check with each manufacturer for sizing guidelines.

Tear Resistance – Tear-resistant fabrics and reinforced stitching with a strong thread will keep road rash at bay — some materials more than others. You could be wearing the strongest material to stand up to the pavement, but if the stitching fails, well, what’s the point of the motorcycle pants?

Abrasion – Fabrics are measured in oz per sq ft or denier, referring to the fabric’s weight, not strength; its weight isn’t linear to its abrasion resistance. Jeans mid-range weight compared to other materials but are the least successful in protecting you against the pavement. Kevlar is the lightest material but proportionately offers more strength per oz than any other material.

Abrasions or road rash can seriously debilitate you after a crash. Depending on the severity and the depth of the rash, it can heal within a couple of weeks or potentially call for skin grafts to close the wound. You’re most likely going to do some skidding in a fall, and abrasion-resistant pants can be the difference in outcomes here.

Style and Purpose

Not all styles of motorcycle pants are going to fit your purpose; just like one bike won’t serve each style of riding. What your friend wears commuting to work won’t be the same as your needs this weekend at the motocross track.

Commuting Motorcycle Pants – These are meeting in the middle. Typically, they’re regular jeans, but they’re not leather or textile either. The fabric is stretched denim, with reinforced stitching and multiple layers covering knees and hips for impact and abrasion protection. In some models, removable armor slides into compartment over high impact areas. Easily store them in your bike’s compartments while you’re at work. For a comfortable riding stance, sometimes there are flex-panels above the knees and waist.

Pay attention to zippers and rivets; if you take a tumble, friction above metal causes it to become hot, potentially burning your skin. And the commuting style isn’t always waterproof; sometimes they’re nice to pair with a commuting over pant.

Commuting Overpants – These are an ideal addition to motorcycle pants you already have. They are usually weather-resistant, have reflective piping, and reinforced knees and seat area. The adjustable looser fit with zippers or snaps for removal makes them easy to slip on and off over your jeans or leather pants.

Your Riding Pants – They are perfect for your joy rides, nowhere particular on the horizon. Made of strong textiles — greater than 600D — or leather, this style of men’s motorcycle pants offers protection for high impact areas, abrasion-resistant fabrics, water-resistant properties, reflective materials. Usually, not weatherproof enough to be touring pants or specific for MX riding.

Adventure Awaiting – Touring Pants – If you’re an all climates and varying terrains kind of rider, touring pants are what you need. Typically a Gore-Tex interior and removable liners keep the pants versatile and appropriate for any day’s weather. Venting and mesh panels usually provide additional air ventilation in summer.

The reinforced seat and knees, pocket armor inserts, and memory form padding provide greater protection than a typical riding pant or commuting pant. They usually have velcro adjustment fittings for a close fit and reflective logos and piping for night visibility.

Off-Road – Off-road or motocross riding pants provide protection but shouldn’t stand alone; riders should supplement their MX pants with other protective gear. There are usually lower amounts of absorption padding with armor and braces usually worn separately. 600D Cordura or higher is a good starting point for the strength of the material.

Look for tapered legs to tuck into your MX boots and stretch panels at the knee, crotch, and waist keep you moving freely during rides. A mesh liner and ventilation to allow for a breeze is a bonus. A leather portion located down the inseam is a protective addition, shielding your inner legs from the heat of the motorcycle’s engine and exhaust.

Motorcycle pants can be the difference between a stint in the hospital or heading out tomorrow morning on your bike. The added protection to the lower half of your body protects your legs from the motorcycle, the asphalt or track, and other drivers.

Motorcycle protective gear is synonymous with the roll cage or frame of your car, and it’s your body’s protection; daily, protective equipment is taken for granted and forgone because “it’s not going to happen to me.” But on what grounds are you making your claim?

Do motorcycle pants go over jeans?

Some motorcycle pants can pull over jeans while you ride, but it’s essential to make sure the extra layer fits correctly without hindering your ability to shift and ride comfortably.

Can you wear jeans on a motorcycle?

You can wear whatever you like on a motorcycle, but we don’t recommend it. Even for a short ride — and even if you’re confident in your riding skills — you don’t know other drivers; you can only trust they’re aware of motorcyclists and continue your knowledge of the road.

Average jeans will provide more protection from the asphalt than shorts will, but jeans are not built to slide tackle the pavement. The fabric will shred, and the seams will separate, leaving you vulnerable to at least a road rash.

If you are worried about looks or practicality, consider motorcycle jeans. Usually, a blend of Kevlar and denim with double or triple stitched reinforced seams and layered fabric on high impacts areas like knees and hips, some with the option to add hard armor while you ride. Commuting over pants are also a great option; they’re easy to pull over your jeans or slacks for protection during your commutes.

Are Kevlar jeans as good as leather?

Tests like the Taber test have put fabrics to the test under stressful conditions. The Taber test was a test done on materials and their abrasion-resistant properties, and while Kevlar is lighter, leather holds up to abrasion better. Still, it can be almost ten times as heavy as Kevlar in certain circumstances. So “as good as” isn’t an accurate measure because the star features of the fabrics are different, and it depends on what you’re looking for as a rider.

I’ve been testing their top-of-the-line men’s shorts for 3 months, donning them for everything from training, rock climbing, swimming, to casual gatherings. But, and hold on to your wallet, they sell for $227.50!

The Beyond Clothing A5 Rig Light Short is the epitome of rugged activewear. And they need to be to command that price. They resist all forms of physical torture short of combustion. I tried very hard to destroy them, yet they emerged with nothing but a softer hand. Every other attribute is a distant consideration.

But Why So Much?

Materials, high-end construction, and made in the USA; these three things drive the price of apparel higher.

The A5 Rig Light Short comes from Beyond Clothing’s Axios line; this eight-layer technical survival system of outdoor clothing is its flagship. And the choice of Tweave Durastretch matches this classification. Durastretch is a stretch woven nylon-based fabric, and my experience with it in technical softshells couldn’t be more positive. Alpine climbing can shred lesser materials in a single outing, but my Durastretch pieces not only survive the harsh, highly abrasive treatment, they thrive. Fabric this durable doesn’t come cheap.

The construction represents the pinnacle of outdoor apparel. Tight double stitching and seam allowances, generously-sized zippers, robust belt loops, and even the webbing-anchored closure button scream quality and beg for rough treatment.

The A5 Rig Light Short isn’t only made in the USA; it’s Berry compliant. This certification ensures all components, down to the thread, are domestically produced. Again, this elevates costs and pricing.

An example of the price differential caused by the reasons above is the Beyond Clothing K5 Ventum Shorts, the same brand, different materials, and manufactured overseas. These shorts retail for $70, a more acceptable price point for men’s hiking shorts.

The A5 Rig Light Short in the Field

The first thing I noticed was the fit; I’m a 32-inch waist, but my hips are slender, and the size-32 shorts with their 10-inch inseam fit perfectly. Typically, most shorts and pants, especially ones domestically produced, are baggy in the hips. But not the A5 Rig Light, making them ideal for trimmer builds.

The A5 Rig Light Shorts have the standard pair of front slash pockets; these provided more than enough storage for my daily EDC of a wallet, phone, and multitool. And when I was active, all items went into the pair of zipped and flapped leg pockets for security.

I live in Central Texas, and the heat and humidity in late summer are off the scale. The A5 Rig Light Shorts were adequately breathable for a short of such heft (verified weight of 12 ounces for a size 32) with the associated ruggedness, windproofing, and Durastretch water resistance. But I had to be moving to “pump” the air through the leg openings and fabric when the humidity was tropical. Sitting still during high-intensity training revealed the lower air permeability compared to my lightweight hiking shorts. But such are the trade-offs for extreme durability. I would have shredded through my airy summer shorts almost immediately during some of my outings.

I admit having the high price in mind when I started testing; I wanted to prove that spending this much money on a pair of shorts didn’t equate to durability. So I went to town; I slid down both wet and dry crystal-strewn granite, purposely hiked against cliffs, and trudged through the sharp brush. But all of this was futile. The only effect was that the initially stiff hand wore in to become softer and more compliant, giving the shorts a better drape than when new. The fabric resisted becoming fuzzy, punctured, or anything else that would visibly indicate wear.

The only thing I didn’t do was light them on fire. I can say with confidence that no other shorts I currently own could have withstood the treatment I gave the A5 Rig Light Shorts. But none of them cost anywhere near $228.

Are They Worth It?

The admittedly lame answer is, “it depends.”

Suppose you value minimizing consumerism, the highest quality construction, domestic manufacturing, have a slim build, and a disposable income. In that case, these can be the longest-lasting, most durable shorts in your drawer. I am historically brutal on outdoor apparel, and these emerged unscathed. I am confident they will do you right in the longevity department.

They are not as breathable as thinly veiled athletic shorts designed for aerobic activity in the heat, but that’s a necessary trade to gain robustness. Then there is the “tactical” look; some like it, some do not. I did not care; the durability was the quality that won over all else.
