Ditch your dad’s keyring and pick up a limited edition EDC powerhouse in the Orbitkey Black Edition. Orbitkey consolidates keys into a neat profile that keeps them organized and silent. It adds its v2 multitool to the Black Edition, which packs a surprising 9 functions despite looking like a bottle opener. The Black Edition v2 multitool features three choices of black leather with varying textures.

orbitkey limited black edition v2 multitool - all three leather patterns

Orbitkey Key Organizer: Why?

Do your keys jangle around noisily on a carabiner, visibly annoying bystanders? Do they look like an awkward bauble or misinterpreted accessory as they hang off the belt loop of your skinny jeans?

Faux pas no more with Orbitkey. Each of the three limited-release Black Edition leather choices goes with any outfit. Whether Crazy Horse, Saffiano, or Cactus, it’s a matter of texture preference. Black Edition will definitely make you look like a professional, if not like a full-on spy.

In fact, it will enhance your spy abilities. The tool compresses keys in a tight stack, so you can carry them around without everyone instantly knowing that they — and, by extension, you — are there. Use the D-ring attachment to pair the setup with any fob you like.

Orbitkey v2 Multitool: Why?

When I first scoped Orbitkey’s v2 multitool, I instantly thought, “what?” followed immediately by, “why?” I was certain it was a bottle opener with a ruler on the spine — big deal. Then when I learned about its claim to wield 9 functions, I was incredulous.

But it’s true! The v2 multitool comprises a box cutter, bottle opener, pry bar, flat-head screwdriver, Phillips-head screwdriver, letter opener, metric ruler, imperial ruler, and file. Ok, a few of these implements are pretty questionable, but in 2021, an EDC multitool should — without question — include tools for opening packages. Screwdrivers can be a nice bonus (never know you need it until you need it). The file is a nice, Swiss Army-like touch. And the bottle opener is an obvious must — especially for anyone who needs to relieve some job-related stress.

In my opinion, the v2 multitool makes Orbitkey Black Edition worth the money: it makes just another key organizer into a legitimate tool.

Pricing

Orbitkey lists each of its three limited Black Edition key organizers at $55 MSRP. You could call that a loud price for a keychain, but how loud is your current set-up, Mr. Jangle-Jeans?

At the time of writing, the tool was too new to be associated with any published reviews. So, if you pick it up, let us know what you think on our social channels.

Garden and woodworking tool company Garrett Wade satisfies the patrician in all of us. Its austere but eye-catching motif recalls a simplicity that’s pastoral but also strangely office-appropriate. Thus, its brass capsule multitool somehow seems to belong in your pocket whether you’re wearing overalls or Brooks Brothers.

With a fitting backstory set in foggy London, the Garrett Wade brass multitool is a 5-in-1, with a case that doubles as a handle. The trim but cultivated tool promises to complete any aesthete’s EDC kit.

garrett wade tools crafts brass multitool

Garrett Wade Tools Finds Inspiration ‘Cross the Pond

Garrett Wade’s brass multitool started at a swap meet in London. Oh wait, they don’t have that crude terminology there — in London they’re called flea markets. Anyway, a pocket-size threaded tube with tools inside caught the eye of a Garrett Wade rover, who brought the intel back stateside.

It’s easy to see why Garrett Wade selected the design. At 3 inches long, it’s extremely easy to carry, and its unassuming appearance and utility seem to fit its catalog perfectly.

A Discreet Multitool

Armed with inspiration, Garrett Wade Tools produced an updated version of the British brass multitool. A two-piece tube hand-tightens together to hold all five tools: 1 & 2) a Phillips and slot screwdriver, 3) a pull hook knife, 4) a drill bit, and 5) a corkscrew. The user selects the appropriate tool, fits it into the reinforced slot, screws the tube back together, and goes to work. The resulting T-shaped tool, called a gimlet, delivers good leverage for twisting.

Astutely, Garrett Wade makes each tool from an alloy specifically chosen to support that tool’s function. Be aware: TSA has been known to confiscate the tools, but let (crestfallen) users keep the case. Still, its 3 ¼-inch total length and barely-there 2 ¾-ounce weight make it a no-brainer EDC item for anyone who can use the tool kit.

Pinkies Out: Brass Multitool User Comments

The user base, from what I can gather in online reviews, is a treasure. Sue, who self-identifies as “FixitGranny” says “I LOVE it !! I have arthritis in my hands from doing crochet and knitting. When I used a regularly handled screwdriver it hurt. This one doesn’t hurt !!!” Craft on, Granny.

Elsewhere, James Campbell says he carries the tool in his briefcase — he doesn’t mention the four-pack of Chablis he also keeps in there.

In Conclusion

In a saturated category, the Garrett Wade brass multitool marches to the beat of its own drum. The five-tool kit is sure to excite EDC folks hungry for something unusual. And it would look just as fitting in the rugged hand of an Amish carpenter as it would in the manicured one of a corporate executive. Not only that, it promises utility.

The T-shaped gimlet arrangement and reinforced connection point help it handle anything its tools are capable of. It’s priced at $37 MSRP.

Swiss Army knife specialists will appreciate Victorinox Swiss Army’s new special edition pocket tool, the Climber Wood Swiss Spirit knife. The tool jackets familiar Swiss Army function with intricate, carved wooden handle scales featuring emblematic scenes and images of Switzerland.

Victorinox will only release 12,000 units of the limited-edition knife. Here’s a closer look at its function, inspiration, and artwork.

swiss army: climber wood swiss spirit special edition

Swiss Heritage Inspiration

The knife’s walnut handle scales show a traditional Swiss scene. The textured wood is laser-cut with notable Alpine peaks and native Swiss wildlife. Skiers, mountaineers, and cyclists also make appearances. A sailboat and viaduct add flair and variety to the carvings.

Quaint but precise, the carvings invoke classical Swiss mountain aesthetics. There’s no indication what “Climber Wood” refers to, but if I were using the knife on a climb, I’d likely appreciate the carvings’ grippy texture and the tool’s multiple functions.

Perhaps, if I found myself high in a Swiss Alpine night enduring a cold, crisp bivy, the carvings in the knife handles would slowly start to animate themselves. And I would soon come alive in the little fantasy world of their creation…or maybe I’d just be hallucinating while dying of hypothermia. In which case, I could use the handle scales to start a fire.

Either way, the pocket tool seems, in fact, useful for climbers.

Pocket Tool Specs

The Climber Wood Swiss Spirit Knife features 12 familiar tools. Two blades, scissors, a bottle opener, and the confounding but quintessential “multipurpose hook.” Of course, the tool includes a corkscrew — because what Swiss climber doesn’t celebrate a summit with a bottle of vintage vino?

And it fits into every climber’s pocket, at a tight 3.6 inches and 2.1 ounces.

Climber Wood Swiss Spirit Edition: Extras & Purchasing

Victorinox commemorates Swiss mountain tradition with the limited-edition Climber Wood Swiss Spirit knife, sending each knife on its journey in a gift box with a certificate. You can find the limited-edition tool on Victorinox Swiss Army’s website. The listed MSRP is $80.

Tactica M.100 Multitool: Take It Anywhere https://improb.com/tactica-m-100-multitool/ Thu, 15 Apr 2021 17:00:48 +0000 https://improb.com/?p=45935 TSA-approved everyday carry.

The post Tactica M.100 Multitool: Take It Anywhere appeared first on Improb.

Multitools come in just about every shape and size. Some feature assortments of Allen wrenches and screwdrivers, others are larger and contain small blades, files, and pliers. But some can be clunky and are better spent resting in a toolbox rather than your pocket or dangling from your belt. The M.100 Multitool from Tactica, a Melbourne, Australia-based multitool company that launched in 2016, does not fall into the clunky category. The M.100 is built to be a light, compact, scratch-free tool you can carry wherever your heart desires — even on an airplane.

Tactica M.100 Multitool: First Glance

The M.100 features an ultra-lightweight composite construction. It weighs 1.6 ounces and spans 3 inches in length by 1.5 inches in width.

The tool’s carabiner-like shape makes attaching it to your belt loop or slipping it in your pocket for quick access easy. It has no sharp edges and a no-scratch surface so you don’t have to worry about dinging or damaging items that share real estate with the M.100, like cell phone screens or sunglasses.

The multitool’s composite outer shell is resilient and sleek. The reinforced core, made from 420-grade stainless steel, provides extra strength so you can trust the tool will hold up when being used as a screwdriver or wrench.

Owing to its lack of sharp edges, the Tactica M.100 Multitool meets TSA requirements for carry-on luggage. So don’t worry about removing it from a bag or being forced to ditch it at the checkpoint.

tactica m.100 multitool

Features & Tools

Every part of Tactica’s M.100 is ready to perform a task. The EDC multitool comprises nearly a dozen unique tools throughout its frame. An integrated, hollowed-out storage compartment holds two hex bits. When not in use, the two bits fit into a heavy-duty magnetic socket that keeps them firmly in place.

The Tactica multitool contains the following toolkit:

 • Package opener
 • Bottle opener
 • Imperial ruler
 • Metric ruler
 • High-torque socket
 • Universal wrench (sizings: 3/16 in-9/16 in; 5 mm-14 mm)
 • Hex bit storage tube
 • Elastomer insert
 • Heavy-duty socket
 • Phillips and flat hex bits

Pricing & Availability

The Tactica M.100 Multitool can be yours for $40 MSRP. It comes in Standard Gray, Black, Orange, or Yellow.

Shipping for this piece of everyday carry begins April 26.

The Gerber Armbar Drive multitool packs eight tools into one compact EDC unit — and it’s named after a wrestling move (OOH YEAH!). Like a one-hand-opening blade and scissors, pocketknife features plus heavier-duty implements (a pry bar and awl) equip the Armbar to aid your way out of tight situations.

Equip the Armbar Cork package for various kitchen needs. Here’s a closer look at the Gerber Armbar Drive.

armbar drive multitool

8-in-1 EDC Pocket Tool

Here’s what the Armbar Drive includes:

 • 2.5” blade
 • pry bar
 • bottle opener
 • striking surface
 • spring-loaded scissors
 • 2.5” driver with a double-sided bit
 • awl

Gerber’s website also mentions a hammer, indicating a sort of shield on the butt of the tool. Using your multitool itself as a hammer seems dubious to me, so I don’t encourage it — except in the direst of situations — but do as I say, not as I do!

Hammer notwithstanding, the Armbar Drive delivers on many multitool essentials and innovates with its included striking surface. It’s up to you to find something to strike against it, but if you’re anything like me when I absolutely need fire, you’ll figure it out.

Gerber’s blade is an interesting specimen: virtually no belly means it won’t be useful for skinning or repetitive chopping. But it looks like a good utility blade due to a flat edge that should be easy to sharpen and a robust tip that should resist chipping.

For the connoisseurs among us (those who don’t open wine bottles with rocks — which definitely includes me), the Armbar Cork package will be helpful. It “handles your kitchen needs,” says Gerber, with a libation-centric toolset including a corkscrew, lever arm, foil cutter, and can opener.

Amazon notes a total weight of 4.1 ounces.

How to Buy the Gerber Armbar Drive

Gerber lists the Armbar Drive at MSRP $39. As of writing, its website was out of stock of the little 8-in-1 EDC powerhouse. Interested parties can proceed to Amazon, where the Armbar was priced at $37, also as of writing.

SparkFun S.H.O.V.E.L. – A Multi-Functional Spork for the Adventurous https://improb.com/sparkfun-shovel/ Wed, 09 Sep 2020 08:00:07 +0000 https://improb.com/?p=42153 An open-source spork. Enough said.

The spork is the biggest thing to happen to cutlery since the Ginsu knife craze of the late eighties. But can anyone improve the spork? The folks at SparkFun think they can, and they think you’re going to love their new design.

The Semi-Horned Oblong Versatile Eating Ladle (S.H.O.V.E.L.) is a titanium spork costing just $10.00. If that’s all we said about it, it would still be a great value. But the S.H.O.V.E.L. has so much more to offer for the outdoors lover, survivalist, or multi-tool enthusiast.

sparkfun s.h.o.v.e.l.

Features

A generous handle provides plenty of space to wrap and stow the six feet of included paracord. Paracord, as all outdoors-people know, might be the single most useful tool anyone can have rattling around at the bottom of their backpack. The paracord doubles as a comfortable handle as well, though it is easy enough to remove the cordage if it’s time to eat some soup, and you want to keep your cord dry.

The eating end of the tool is a pretty standard spork, nicely polished for comfort and with just enough bite in the prongs to hang on to soft food. On the other end (SparkFun calls it the “business end”) is a curved, serrated blade perfect for opening packages, cutting food, or trimming the paracord, as mentioned above. The curved surface of this blade gives it some utility as a butter knife or all-purpose spreader. A deeply cut bottle-opener should grab bottle caps with ease, and the leverage provided by the length of the S.H.O.V.E.L. looks like it will make short work of any stubborn lids.

sparkfun s.h.o.v.e.l.

Open Source Design

If the phrase “open source” calls to mind free software and digital technology, you aren’t alone. But SparkFun has taken the concept to a whole new level. They encourage you to improve upon the S.H.O.V.E.L. – you don’t even have to buy one first. SparkFun provides all the plans, specs, and documentation you’ll need to create a multi-functional spork yourself (assuming you have the tools and materials).

We love this kind of innovative thinking, so consider heading to SparkFun.com and grabbing a S.H.O.V.E.L. for your next adventure. Who knows, maybe you’ll even come up with a way to make it better.

The post The 12 Best Multi Tools appeared first on Improb.

]]>

The everyday-carry scene is full of flexible options that are meant to be as versatile and as portable as possible. From backpacks to knives, they are all meant to blend in and pack as many different features as can be merged together. Before you spend hours reviewing the latest design marvels in this niche, why not go back to the original item designed to be the ultimate “one size fits all” gadget?

Multi-tools may have started like a thickset alternative to Swiss Army knives, but many high-end models are now proper portable toolboxes. Many have even developed specialized models that target specific hobbies or subcultures – ranging from hiking to backroad motorbiking or even tactical gear aficionados. Nevertheless, the true supremacy in the multi-tool industry will always be versatility, which is why you will find any model on this list to be capable of saving a life – if used right.

Sturdy and eager to let your inner MacGyver fly, these 12 best multi-tool models will give you what you need.

Leatherman Squirt PS4 Keychain Multi-ToolLeatherman Squirt PS4 Keychain Multi-Tool

If your carrying capacity is limited, then it makes sense to want to devote as little room as possible to the utilities you are unlikely to need. On the other hand, it will be doubly important to ensure you are carrying everything you will actually have a use for. This can be a hard balance to strike in the everyday-carry community, but it is also a test that the Leatherman Squirt has passed with flying colors.

With a closed length of just 2.25 inches, this multi-tool is small enough to hang from your belt or attach to your keychain without making your pockets explode. Nevertheless, they have still managed to pack nine different tools inside: a pair of pliers, wire cutters, a resistant bottle opener, a small knife, and a couple of screwdrivers. Add the fact that it’s made from stainless steel and a proprietary carbon composite, and you have a true lightweight winner.

Purchase

Gerber’s Center DriveGerber’s Center Drive

This is a completely redesigned multi-tool that eliminates the weight imbalance that is typical of most multi-tools currently available. They have managed this by creating two axes from which all the components stem, rather than just one. If this sounds like something to be avoided, as it would make for a terribly bulky and unwieldy tool, then you ought to take a close look at the Center-Drive first.

This tool can be opened or closed back with just a quick flick of the wrist. The full open length barely reaches 6.6 inches, and when fully compressed, it is barely 4.7 inches. Somehow, they managed to turn this into enough space to pack 12 different tools, which include a 3.25-inch utility knife, spring-loaded pliers, a set of screwdrivers, a serrated blade, and a #1 cross bit. Finally, the black sheath that surrounds the package makes it look remarkably elegant.

Purchase

LEATHERMAN Surge Heavy Duty Multi-ToolLEATHERMAN Surge Heavy Duty Multi-Tool

For those who are heavily invested in mechanical or construction work, there is little to be gained from a set of tiny tools that are unable to resist a standard day of hard labor. Does that mean that you should stick to carrying oversized toolboxes and heavy chests? Not with the Leatherman Surge, at least.

This is a heavy-duty piece of equipment in every sense of the word. It is not something that you will be able to sneak into your pocket discreetly. Instead, this Leatherman multi-tool is a combination of 21 highly functional tools, which include knives, pliers, screwdrivers, decently sized scissors, a “small saw,” and a highly accurate ruler. Despite a closed length of just 4.5 inches, the main blasé offers 3.1 inches of edge. All these whistles remain easy to maneuver thanks to the MOLLE sheath mechanisms and spring-loaded closures. Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit XVictorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X

There is little left to be said about Victorinox; there is a reason why this brand has risen to become synonymous with utility knives and multi-tools alike. They did not invent the concept, but they were among the first to mass-produce it and make it affordable to people of all ages – as well as to turn it into a pure symbol of adulthood and self-reliance.

With the Swiss Tool Spirit X, they have also driven the concept to a new height. The ergonomic grip appears very similar to that of most multi-tools, but it hides functional, spring-loaded tools that are just as capable of applying strength as they are to perform a delicate task. In addition to the mandatory can and bottle openers and basic screwdrivers, this tool also packs a reamer and a crate opener, amidst a total 27 different functions. They are all available in smooth, industrial-grade steel and weigh less than 10 ounces.

SOG Knife Q2SOG Knife Q2

If you are proud to be a Jack of all Trades, then you will definitely appreciate the benefits of partnering with an experienced and creative designer such as IDEO. For SOG, this bold idea started out as a risky gamble; this design firm has as many divisions and branches as humanly possible and has created deluxe accessories for musicians, governments, and the military alike. The resulting knife is not only packed with hidden utility tools, but it’s also easy to clean, quick to master, and beautiful to look at.

The basic layout follows a butterfly-shaped foldout, which allowed SOG to keep both ends usable and operational. This small and discreet baton is made from aluminum and stainless steel. In addition to a smooth knife, a serrated pair of scissors, a bottle opener, and a Phillips screwdriver, it also hides a small but powerful flashlight that can provide up to 70 lumens, a smooth-edged nail clip, and a set of precise tweezers that would make a surgeon jealous.

Leatherman Free P2Leatherman Free P2

The FREE-P Series was first started by Leatherman as a cheeky response to the invasion of do-all, be-all electronic appliances. Just like you can now use your smartphone to handle basically any office-related task, the Leather Free P2 breaks free from the constraints of its genre and can be considered a “smart-multi-tool”.

The magnetic closing and warranty-protected springs are in charge of making 19 different tools get along, hugging each other tightly for maximum convenience. All the included tools can be flung open easily, without risking any broken nails or erroneous deployments. The idea is to ensure that you can choose exactly what you need, reach for it, and have it ready for action using one hand only. The indescribable amount of haptic feedback and unwavering reliability necessary to make this a reality deserved a price – as does the fact that it can all fit in less than 5 inches.

Gerber DimeGerber Dime

A multi-tool is not a professional toolbox, so it should not cost as much as one: if your budget is tight but your needs are extensive, the Gerber Dime model can provide you with a good compromise until you can upgrade to a larger multi-tool. Do not make the mistake of thinking low price is synonymous with poor quality; while the Dime keeps everything small and tidy, the designers have ensured that every tool included works well and can last for years.

This small stainless steel marvel comes in seven different colors and packs 10 tools. This includes a wire cutter, a fine-edged blade, a serrated knife, a package opener, tweezers, and a jail-worthy nail file. The total length, however, barely reaches 4.25 inches when fully extended and is less than 3 inches long when closed; this is an ideal size for discretion.

The James Brand Ellis KnifeThe James Brand Ellis Knife

The James Brand has created a utility knife that can act like a multi-tool, although it could simultaneously be described as a portable toolset that can double up as a chef’s favorite knife. Either way, there is little room left to doubt that this is no mere foldable knife.

Let’s start with the materials. High-grade aluminum and Sandvik steel were both smoothed out and tempered to near-perfection, then reinforced by phosphor bronze. This will nullify the long-term effects of rust and will deter bacteria from growing near the blades. The built-in tools include a flathead screwdriver, a scraper, and two knives (a serrated and a smooth-edged one). They all use a Lockback mechanism to stay secure until it’s time to use them. When fully extended, it reaches a total length of 6.1 inches, although it only weighs 2.8 ounces.

SOG Power Access DeluxeSOG Power Access Deluxe

SOG has a wide enough catalog to offer utility knives and tactical gear for a variety of professions and specializations. Following this trend, their Power Access Deluxe Multi-Tool has been specifically created for electricians and mechanical technicians. This is immediately evident by the emphasis on pliers and drivers, which can easily adapt to almost any wire or console that needs to be accessed on a whim. In addition, a ¼-inch hex bit driver and a small wood saw round out a powerful, if slightly heavy, tool.

The sheath is coated in ballistic nylon, which is exactly what you need if you wish to preserve the industrial strength and sharpness of its stainless steel. With a total of 21 tools and less than 5 ounces, this model provides the best power-per-ounce available to the general public.

Wallet Ninja 18-in-1 Multi-ToolWallet Ninja 18-in-1 Multi-Tool

Few purists would admit that a credit-card-shaped piece of metal can count as a true multi-tool. While many cheaper brands have attempted such “utility solutions” and failed, Wallet Ninja was the original creator of the idea, and so far, have remained the only ones to create a truly durable, yet affordable success.

The secret is in the steel; while it will make any metal detector ring, it has been heated 4 times and is therefore rust-resistant and resilient enough to be used without fear of breaking. This is not the kind of gear you can take while hunting, but it includes an eyeglass screwdriver, a box cutter, a cell phone stand, and a series of practical openers that will keep you covered during social situations and emergency repairs alike.

Hoffman Richter Multi-Tool HR-100Hoffman Richter Multi-Tool HR-100

Hoffman Richter has not shied away from design innovations or superb materials when creating their HR-100 Multi-Tool. The easiest difference to spot between this model and all its competitors is the shape; at first glance, the HR-100 appears to be a set of light pliers with surprisingly thick handles. Closer inspection will reveal that each side of the handles actually holds together over 5 tools each, which range the full gamut between basic nail clippers to thinly edged knives.

The materials were clearly chosen to maximize utility and durability rather than to be hidden on a dress pants’ pocket. Ultra-durable 440 stainless steel makes up most tools and the safety lock, while the main handle is made from a proprietary composite that has been carefully textured to improve the grip.

Craighill hoped to accomplish two things in creating the Craighill Desk Knife: to capture the feel of an instrument of writing, and to mimic the kiridashi knives of Japan. The elegant piece they have to offer is a brilliantly designed multipurpose tool that is as functional as it is gorgeous.

Display it anywhere you like, from the countertop, to the workplace, and most certainly, your desk. In every setting, you will find it comes in handy for a great many jobs. You might even find a use for the references markers on the end of the knife, measuring every half inch.

Made of stainless steel, and completely in the United States, these knives are milled in Wisconsin while a Craighill workshop in New York City takes care of all the finishing touches. The end product is a desk knife that is 5.25-inches long and weighs only 4.5 ounces (ca. 133 ml).

You’ll find the edge very easy to keep sharp, as it is flat ground and not overly decorated. At the same time, it is a tasteful addition to your desktop for letter opening, diving into packages, or any other desk side feat you deem it worthy of accomplishing.
